Yeah, flash was the main reason I stuck with 32bit. Seemed like too much hassle at the time!

As for driver issues, I just have a picky PC, trying to get the official ATI drivers to run on any Linux distro is a nightmare, that’s why I am so surprised compiz-fusion worked out of the box on Ubuntu 7.10 (7.04 wouldn’t even load a 2D GUI without editing the xorg.conf). It pays to do a bit of searching around for hardware that is 100% compatible with Linux before buying!

I am lazy now though, if something doesn’t "just work" I tend to loose interest. I think I may have killed my inner geek with alcohol lol.

A discussion about operating systems over a pint! lol, we haven’t done that for a while. Unfortunately I won’t be about, I am going away for a week on Friday.

Fact is there is no 64 bit Flash plug in. But there is a way around that. If you get Automatix you can install SwiftFox and SwiftFox Pluggins it is a special version of Firefox for 64 bit that runs a 32 bit version and uses 32bit plug ins works like a charm. But if you want full compatibility with everything I would install 32 bit Kubuntu/Ubuntu 7.04. That is what I have on my 3500 x64 systemand it runs flawlessly. There are many plug ins that have no 64 bit version.

For Graphics/Audio/Video Xine is a must (all stream plugins as well),
Automatix codecs a must. Be carefull with Automatix use only programs that do not already have a Ubuntu version.
Audio editing Audicity 7.04 version
Graphic Editing: Gimp 7.04 version
If you have NVidia or ATI graphics card set it up from the 7.04 version not Automatix.
If you require NTFS read write install ntfs-3g from the 7.04 dist do not use the Automatix install.
Music/Video/Blog support like iTunes Songbird, it is great. Also works with your iPod.

Best mail program by far is Thunderbird.
Wine is a good choice for normal Windows programs. But if you have to have some windows only stuff VirtualBox is the best (no 3d support but it is really fast) this is also available from 7.04 dist (do not use VMware unless you have to) Buy using virtual box you can use Windows Media Player if you need it. If you have WindowsXP installed in VirtualBox you can even have Windows Media Player 11. :-D

I'm still tweaking a few things on my Ubuntu setup.  Still no luck on DVD playback.

Curious, what do you like better:  Gnome or KDE?  I know this is probably an age old argument, but I thought I could get an unbiased opinion here rather than the Ubuntu forum since it's based on Gnome.  Does one look nicer over the other?  Does Compiz-Fusion work on both?

Personally, I'm liking Gnome just fine.  It's fun to organize and customize, just the like the ol' Amiga.  And I got it looking pretty too...

... and then I booted back over to WinXP to reinstall one of my games and thought.... "Man this is ugly."

Gnome or KDE? I've used both and I've come to like Gnome more over time. Couldn't even put my finger on what it is that I like about it either I think choosing your window manager is simply a personal preference you reach after a while.

Defending that choice is usually the dumb part

I know what you mean about switching back to windows afterwards too. I think it's from investing a fair bit of time and finding things to be easier than I imagined them to be in Ubuntu.

Compiz-Fusion should work just fine in any of the Ubuntu installs be they KDE, Gnome or Xfce... I don't think theres any reason that the education (eUbuntu) version can't use it in fact as it's not tied to Ubuntu in particular it's just a general system for any distro of Linux.

Here is something cool for you to try!

xwinwrap will replace your backdrop with the output from another app, so you can have movies, realtime fractals and screensavers playing as your backdrop. :D
http://swik.net/xwinwrap

edit: You may need to do a bit of digging around the net for more info on how to use it with ubuntu, its not as easy as i first thought! Still cool to try tho :)

@Red:

I've recently moved from WinXP to Ubuntu Feisty (recently as in a few months ago) - Needless to say the transition was pretty painful heh. A few apps (such as Altium Designer 6) don't really have equals under Linux - BUT, once you get over the fact that nothing you *need* works under Linux, it's really quite pleasant :P

I bought a new nVidia card just for the eyecandy provided by Beryl and Emerald (ATi cards are a major pain to setup!). This video pretty much sold me: (vista effects vs Ubuntu + Beryl effects): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xC5uEe5OzNQ

All in all, it's been maybe 4 months now, and I could proudly say I would never look at, nor even {bleep} on Windows for a desktop machine!

Yup, unusable! Only thing I have running decently under wine is Flash 8, Flashget and Winrar. Unfortunately that's the only thing stopping me from overwriting Windows on my laptop too, I need Altium designer 6 and MPLab

They work absolutely great under WinXP in VMWare though - If I upgrade to a Core2 Duo (w/virtualization support) as well as 2GB of ram, I can get rid of windows for everything except gaming heh :P

Edit: Get rid of windows as in, not dedicate a whole machine to running it

It took some playing around with, but I managed to get Compiz-Fusion working on my Feisty 64bit install.  Oh wow!  I know people out there say it's a waste of resources and not productive, but it sure is fun to look at and watch.  It makes working on the computer fun again.  Something I loved about the Amiga.

My daughter thinks it's neat that my windows bounce around like jello and fade in and out and stuff.  I love it!

Still having the hardest time getting the DVD to work still.

Hi,

Glad your enjoying Ubuntu 7.04, one person on here keeps saying to try Automatix, well I tried it and it really frapped up my computer, it took me 3 days to straighten out and get working again, it even took out Windows Vista, which was on a seperate hard drive, now I don't know if I did something wrong with Automatix or if it is malicious software, anyhow I won't try it again, until somebody proves that I messed up the installation somehow.

But on the other hand since I have been using Linux since the first editions that came out I don't think I messed up.

Some books that you can buy at the book stores for Ubuntu:

Ubuntu Bible and Ubuntu Hacks, I like Ubuntu Hacks the best the author speaks in plain language and does not try to impress anyone with his knowledge of Ubuntu, the bible goes deeper in depth on how to control Ubuntu down to the brass tacks, (American saying for down to the basics). Any how I am going to re-install my DVD movie player tonight, so that I can watch movies on my system, I will try to write down the steps for you and get them to you. If I don't forget, I am getting old and senile.

Anyhow, Ubuntu seemed pretty solid for the past 6 months until I tried Automatix, I had no problems, Ubuntu has taken the place of Windows Vista as my main operating system, the only reason I have Vista at all is to play the new games that are arriving, X10 shading is awesome.

Now in order to play windows games on Ubuntu, I suggest Cedega, it costs $5.00 a month to join and they have a huge list of games that they have adapted to play on Linux systems. Currently I am playing Far Cry, Castle Wolfenstein, Call of Duty, Battlefield 1942, Battlefield Viet Nam, and Half Life.

I am also playing the chip tunes from the Aminet disks, you have to download LHA and install it, but through Synaptec it is a cinch, you then uncompress the files, download the restricted mod codec and the tunes will play in Rhythmbox Music player (pretty cool) you can also uncompress pictures and mpegs and play them. Not as easy as the Amiga, but I am sure if there is enough intrest, someone will come up with a way to do it as easily as Aminet did. Also look at all the free programs you can download and install, Kine does video editing, Lives also does video editing, so far I like lives the best, it has more features than Kine but is also slower.

Now to make someone angry, my main feature.

I went to Niagra falls and crossed over to Canada to do some hunting, bagged three Canadians I did.

To all you poor users using Macs, I feel really sorry for you, gave in to the I want to use it but not know it crowd.(Now where is that On/Off switch at. RTFM to find out, it only has one line in it, it explains where it is at and how to use it, in 71 different languages.

Wayne do you own a MAC or have a Big MAC?

I have no idea what your talking about, so here is a doggy with a small pancake on his head.
