Amithlon on a laptop???
« on: August 14, 2007, 08:58:38 AM »
Hi,

Does anyone know, or have an idea if Amithlon would work on an IBM Thinkpad R51?

I've only heard a bit about Amithlon, but it looks like a nice emulator.

Can anyone tell me (in a nutshell) whether it's better than WinUAE and why it doesn't seem to be developed any more?

For what little I know if it, it seems that it has many of the advantages of AROS with the compatibility of WinUAE...

Cheers,

Mike.

It has totally different concept to UAE, so comparing them is quite pointless IMO. Amithlon is ever further away from AROS, so comparing to it is ever more pointless.

However, AFAIK there are still some kernel upgrades for Amithlon being made (linux kernel upgrades adding more driver support, the amithlon itself is dead).

So am I WAY off when I'm assuming it's an Amiga emulator that 'takes' over the PC it runs on (rather than sitting onto of windows, like WinUAE)?

Will it run native classic amiga software (as WinUAE will)?

If you could point me to a FAQ, that would be great...

Cheers,

Mike.

Correct.

Correct. But not as many apps as WinUAE. All system friendly apps work fine however. As far as I know HW hitting games won't run.

I have tried it on several different desktops and laptops. It boots fine on my IBM Thinkpad A31 which isn't far different from the R51.

HERE is the page of the updated Kernels that supports new hardware such as SATA drives, etc.

If you search on Aminet there are a lot of other files that you can download for.

Amithlon looks sweet, it is WAY faster than any other amiga emulator but doesn't support the custom chips. If you like to play amiga games then WinUAE is your answer but if you like all the rest of the OS features and power then Amithlon will give you that experience.

Amithlon is a rather difficult thing to describe.

Imagine an ordinary PC. Imagine if someone was to take out the x86 CPU of that PC and replace it with a 680x0 that runs at Hundreds of Megahertz.  Then that person was to install AmigaOS on it.  You’d have something close to Amithlon.  It wouldn't be able to run Speedball2, but it would be very responsive and be able to render your imagine animations blisteringly fast.

Actually, that’s a gross over-simplification.  There is far more to Amithlon than meets the eye, it can do some really cool stuff.  It was one of the greatest losses in Amiga history. :-(

Agreed.  If not for the legal squabble, Amithlon might have evolved into the most compatible and exciting upgrade path available to us today.  Imagine buying the latest machine, dumping the supplied OS (or keeping it) and installing and running Amiga OS faster than we've ever seen it and with modern interfaces.  Maybe Aros.

Well, maybe. But to me it didn't seem any different than booting windows directly into an emulator.  Actually it was probably worse since you couldn't have multiple configurations for different types of machines.

But then I only played with it a few times and quickly got irritated with the constant crashes.

I still have a copy of Amithlon. It was too good to be true. This product properly marketed with eventual AGA or OCS/ECS emualtions would have been a great product.

The speed is blistering, imagine an Amiga with a high end graphics card made from spare pc parts most folks throw away...

Amiga...Even when they have a winning solution they manage to anihilate the whole thing.

It defies reason, mercy, or logic.
