converting/viewing excel files?
« on: August 09, 2007, 10:28:40 AM »
Hi.
 I'm trying to convert an .xls file using xlhtml, to view it on my Amiga:
http://aminet.net/util/conv/xlhtml.lha
 I'm using the filename as the only argument and i'm getting the message: "xlhtml: cole: No such file or directory" What is the meaning of this??
 With older versions of xlhtml i don't get any messages. The CPU becomes 100% busy, the program appears to consume memory but nothing else happens. I waited for 15 minutes and then i "break" it. Is there something wrong with this utility? Is there anyone who succeeded in converting excel files with it?

 Also, is there an Amiga program capable of handling excel files directly?

ie. TurboCalc 5 can handle old excel formats (v4).

@jeckel
 Ok, i tried to open the file with TurboCalc about 40 minutes ago. The HD LED flickers constantly, TurboCalc keeps the CPU at 100% and the mouse pointer is permanently busy at the TurboCalc screen. Besides all these the TC window remains as it was when i first launched it. Empty.. Should i wait more?  I think it has entered an infinite loop.. :-?

 Here is the zipped .xls i'm trying to view:
http://home.comcast.net/~dpangelini/Master_3DW_List_v6b.zip

 Perhaps it's too recent for xlhtml and TurboCalc. Could anyone try it with these programs and tell me if they can handle it or not. Maybe i'm just doing something wrong.

@Voodoo
 Ok, thanks. Give it a try when you have the time.
 Did you use any extra arguments with xlhtml to make it work or just the filename? Is it the same version with the Aminet one?

Save it as .csv and then you can read it with anything.

Several things, there are Datatypes out there for Word 95, and other documents. I believe they came out around 1996-97.

Link:
http://go.to/docdatatypes

But alas no Excel.. You could probably save the excel doc out as word 95 then use this to view it

Excel wasn't big in the classic Amiga days, Lotus 1-2-3 was still king of the hill. Most Amiga spreadsheets have lotus format import formats (very few of them supports macros and code from other spreadsheets). Excel and write to 1-2-3 files (or at least it used to be able to).

Microsoft is moving to support OpenXML standard formats for Office 2007 and beyond (meaning .XLS files are a thing of the past). They just released an OpenXML toolkit and will also be supporting OpenOffice's XML formats for data.

If you are interested in an article of converting Excel to XML, you might find this article:

http://www.xml.com/pub/a/2002/01/09/q-and-a.html

You might have better luck taking the file to a PC running open office or ms office somewhere and converting html there..Or get some sort of PC emulation with open office or MSOffice on the Amiga.

Last time I used Xlhtml perhaps 3½ years ago I had no problems - just they didn't look too nice...
