Amiga, WLAN and encryption
« on: August 01, 2007, 08:10:57 AM »
So I just purchased a Netgear MA401 802.11b WLAN PCMCIA card, which should work with prism2.device according to this page.  Pardon for asking silly questions, but this is all new stuff for me.

I decided to do some research before it arrives.  I've never configured an Amiga for WLAN before, only cabled networks.

- What kind of encryptions are supported?  I'm currently using 128-bit WEP2 encryption on my router, should I change this to something.. easier?  WEP?  No encryption, just MAC filtering?

- How do I configure the encryption on the Amiga?  If so, where?  In the device driver, or AmiTCP?

- Any other tips/hints/howto's?
Code 6502 asm or... DIE!!

Actually you may want to read the manual that comes with the prims2 driver, things are explained pretty well there.

I assume you mean WPA2. Unfortunately, only WEP is supported. The encryption is configured with the SetPrism2Defaults command that comes with the driver, like:

SetPrism2Defaults SSID wlan1 KEY 1234-abcd-89

You can put this into your s:user-startup file for example.

Ah, I see.  I bought the card a couple of hours ago and thougth I'd do some "fishing" here before getting started.  I see now that the prism2.device takes care of that.

A bit quick on the keys there, yes WPA2 is the one.  WEP is "secure enough" for me.

Thanks for your help :-)

ah. you mean it's enough of a deterrent...don't use the word security in the same sentence as the acronym wep...unless you're referring to a lack of security  :-)
