Help using Euro 240v PSU in USA
« on: July 28, 2007, 09:48:51 PM »
Hey Amigos

Here is my situation.

we just got in a custom 4000 tower with a euro 240v psu. It does not have a toggle switch for usa 110v current. The way the tower is hacked the psu is hard to replace, so I want to use it. How can I convert the power please? Any help/suggestions are appreciated.

Seriously, Dude, there are plenty of converters available on the market, at least here in Europe. Modifying the PSU itself seems to a little too much.

Would this work with a 110/240V transformer ? All you need to know is the rating of the Miggy PSU. I know they sell 240 to 110V ones in the UK for USA equipment (TV's etc), so I guess they will sell 110 to 240V in the USA for European kit  :-)

I guess its just the frequency difference then, if it affects timing, but then you did say it had a hacked psu so maybe its OK  :-o

The PSU converts AC to DC, so I doubt going from 50 to 60 Hz would make a difference, but there are probably people on this board with more experience in electronics, who know for certain.

Thanks for the quick responses guys! Interesting thread as well.

I'm not trying to mod the psu - just trying to adapt it so i can plug it into my normal us 110v.

As I wrote earlier. Converters for using European equipment in U.S. sockets is widely available. Wouldn't risk blowing that pretty 4000 to pieces. :-)

If you have to ask how to modify a power supply, you shouldn't do it. These are dangerous electronic components and modifying them without knowing how could easily kill your computer and/or you. Look for a new power supply!

Yes, I'm aware of that, I was trying to remember what that 'tick' signal was again with big box Miggy's. If the psu is sending a tick pulse to the Miggy then that is most definately frequency dependant
