Best OS 3.1 setup?
« on: July 28, 2007, 05:18:40 AM »
Hey guys,

I've been thinking of changing the setup of my Miggy in my sig, the A1200.  Right now I'm running Classic Workbench 'Lite' which was what I needed when I first started.

But now, I've got a nicer system (thnx Rockape) and want to use more of it potential.:-D  Any suggestions on what setup I should use, if there are more choices than 'Classic Workbench'?

Oh, and please take note that I'm a beginner when it comes to Miggies, but with a little instruction, I'm able to do whatever I want.  I used to be a PC tech for years, but now I hate working on them. :pissed:

Also, I'm using a Commodore 1702 Monitor, so Nothing with high res.

Thanks guys,
Steve

Hi Steve, well I admit I don't fully understand what you are looking for... add-ons, etc. for OS 3.1??

You may have some trouble getting utilities, etc. from say, Aminet, to your Amiga. You should try to get a CD-ROM or hack one onto your 1200.
Some ideas, I don't know what classic Amiga 'lite' is, I assume that you are running just a basic OS3.1 setup, with bland-looking icons, and grey background??
OK, if so, check out programs like ReqAttack, RandWBPatt, MCP (warning: not for newbies...)
Some other A.org members can help better...

Oh, BTW, the 1702 will handle amiga hi-res modes as well as interlace, and PAL with a bit of fiddling... just no double hi-res, Productivity, etc...
(I have 1702's hooked up to my 2 A4000's (have an Amiga monitor shortage, ATM)

Well, here's what I'm running now...  http://classicwb.abime.net/ , but I'm running the 'Lite' version right now.

It's just a ready to go Amiga WB solution.  Not much to setup, just install and run.  Anyway, that's kinda what I'm looking for, but I wanted something that would have a little more pizzaz for the hardware I have.

     As for the 1702,  I'm sorry, :-P I meant no Super-High Res.   I'm actually running NTSC:High Res on my 1702 now.  :-)

Thanks,
Steve

You could try the Full ClassicWB now that you have the memory to run it.

I think that's your best option. There aren't that many easy to install complete packages.

Also you have an 030 and no graphics card so some of the more advanced UI enhancers are not really interesting for your system.

Yeah.  :-(   I'd like to get a hold on an affordable A3000 or A4000 System, when I have money of course...   :-)

I have such a machine and I'm considering buying an extra 1200 just make a nice WHDLoad machine to use with my TV.

An A1200 with 030 and can be a really sweet system. I see that ClassicWB Full comes with WHDLoad installed. You should install ClassicWb Full and see what it has to offer over Lite.

Do you think I'd be able to run the AdvSP, even though I only have a 15kHz Monitor?   I would think I'd just have to set it to NTSC:High Res again after installing the WB.

Thanks,
Steve

Yes you can run that. I like the look of those icons better. The higher resolutions are not obligatory but the icons are adjusted for it to better fit the screensize.

The easiest way to get better graphics capabilities out of your amiga is a with a Mediator.  The main advantage is that it is currently supported.  Then get a Voodoo card and you'll have 1600x1200 pixels and ~32M colors to make a really nice looking WB.  :)
Primary:
A4000T. Phase5 PPC604e-233mhz/060-66mhz. Mediator, Z3 Fastlane, Voodoo5, Delfina, X-Surf, AD516, Peggy Plus.

Collection:
A4000D, A1200, A500, Milan060 (Atari clone), Atari MegaSTE, Atari TT030, C64, C128, Mattel Aquarius, (2) HP Jornada....

I think I might be able to handle the icons being all squashed until I can get a scandoubler/flickerfixer.  That way I don't have to change OS setups again.

Thanks again,
Steve
