Say from 1.3 to 3.1

Hey guys,

     I'm trying to get the 'Say' program from my old WB1.3 disks onto my WB3.1 system hard drive.   I've got it copied, but now how do I get it to work?  I've gotten.  :boohoo:

You also need to copy the other essential components
libs/translator.library and devs/narrator.device

Check out Speak2Sample.lha on Aminet. Its a tool to turn Say output into audio sample files, but contains a doc on how to move Say from <3.x WB to 3.x

 When on aminet, download the updates for translator.library and narrator.device.

 There is a lot of "new" say replacements on aminet, too. Personally I like saytoy.

Ah indeed, Workbench 1.3 added this handler, it wasn't available in earlier Workbenches... :-)

I like the Say command and its associated bits. If you get the Translator Prefs editor, then you can extract and edit the exception table from translator.library, and make your mig speak proper, like. (I made mine speak Ancient Greek, no biggy, the phonemes are very good for some languages. English is actually one of the hardest to do well.)

I've looked all over in the WB2.04 disks and I can't find these files...

Later copies of 2.04 and 2.05 disks don't have them. Support was officially dropped with 2.1, but Commodore lost rights to the underlying technologies before 2.1 shipped. Thus the last few batches of 2.0x are speech-free. Looks like you've got one of the unlucky sets. See Workbench Nostalgia for more info.

I haven't found an update for the narrator.device on Aminet.

I've never messed with the mountlist.   Mind telling me how to do that? :-?

Load the Mountlist file from 1.3 WB disk into editor, find the "SPEAK:" secion, copy it and save as DEVS:DOSDrivers/SPEAK on your 3.x system.
