Mediator and usb card again...
« on: July 23, 2007, 09:37:42 PM »
Hi all!

In the last few month i searched for usb cards which is compatible with my mediator a1200. I read in an other forum, that a guy has a working usb card on his mediator with openusb. it was a card with ali chipset. I didn't find any of it. I heard that the spider usb cards was originally nec cards. So i picked up some usb nec cards in my shop, and one of this seems to have working. In trident (prefs/trident) it shows 2 running usb ports.(out of 4,but i will happy with 2 ports) One is ohci and one is ehci. It is say something about to "plug in baby" but when i put an usb pendrive to one of its port nothing happens. I try hdtoolbox, but no effect. SO What Now?

Try this: go into Trident, go offline, then online, while the pendrive is still in. Sometimes, it works for me that way. I don't know why.

I managed to get one of those USB boards with the Ali chip, but I couldn't get it to work with OpenPCI.

Have you tried the fix broken compatibility option?
I need this for the Spider which is as you say an NEC card.

Sorry, I'm not a software expert but you shouldn't get a yellow Guru when you go offline. Sounds like something isn't set up right.

Try removing then re-installing Poseidon, though i'm guessing it's probably something to do with your OS installation :(

@derringer

If you're trying to use OpenPCI with the Mediator 1200, I'd forget it if I were you.  I tried all kinds of cards, ALi, OPTi, NEC, VIA, etc.; none of them work with Poseidon.  Someone reported it works with the Mediator 4000Di version; but that Mediator works a bit differently than the 1200 version.  So we're stuck with buying a $4 NEC card rebadged for $70 from Elbox :(

there's a program called arackattack on aminet.  I think you need that in conjunction with poseidon to use pci usb cards on mediator, then go to the prefs. and it should detect it, if it is compatable...

Tha later versions of poseidon stack Does not work with the mediator card. Perhaps that is the reason for the yellow guru ?.

As I understand it for now there is only clockport USB hardware to buy (dont counting the Elbox spider).

Sad problem that Chris Hodges and Elbox went to war, Even that I feel that Hodges is doing the right thing to protect his product Poseidon. Even Worse is that other programmers supporting the war and end their work on mediator support.
As for now I do not know any other PCI busboard that works with the A1200 So it's really a problem for the Amiga End User.

Yeah i noticed it, now. This is sad. Anyway Is it means that you can't register, or directly stopping to work as soon as it recognize, that you're using a mediator?

--------Re: OpenPCI support

Here is the original thread which caused this excitement. Perhaps it is worth PM'ing stopthegop to ask for a detailed explanation of what he installed, rather than randomly installing bits of openpci and arrakattack just yet. I believe he is a New Yorker, so he may take overnight to contact.

--------Re: Poseidon/Spider limitations

As I understand it there is no functionality problem with the newer versions of Poseidon working with the mediator/spider. The keyfile is where the modifications have been made. The poseidon keyfiles issued (since the boycott began) are hardware specific - they do not recognise the spider as licensed USB hardware.
Actually, it could be that they do not recognise the spider.device as a valid device driver, in which case if you were using openpci usb device driver this may not be an issue.

Perhaps it is worth asking Chris (Platon) about this.

Not entirely accurate - if you have a mediator installed there is nothing to stop you using a zorro/clockport usb adapter - Poseidon will still function. There was some talk of Elbox sabotaging their mediator drivers to prevent them working alongside E3B hardware (Subway, Algor, Highway, etc), however how this currently remains hearsay AFAIK.
