WB 3.1 hidden files?
« on: July 23, 2007, 06:39:23 PM »
I just got my 3.1 ROM and WB 3.1 and was wondering if there are any hidden files/programs on the WB disks? Also if there are any that aren't hidden but are useful and not copied during the install?

I don't think that AOS/FFS has support for hidden files, so answer is no.
If, by hidden, you mean a program without an icon, there are are plenty of commands in the C directory. Accessible through the CLI.

I actually think Installer is not copied over by default, so do that and save yourself the headache later.

It is copied, but many install scripts look it from the wrong location (C:).

Not, it's not. 3.9 copies it, 3.1 doesn't.

Another useful file which is not copied is the Reboot command. It lets you reboot the Amiga from a shell script.

Hmm, I guess that's because the installer and reboot are located on the Install-floppy, and no files are copied from it.

Anyway, I stand corrected.

WB 3.1 users should probably also replace the original Installer with Installer-43.3 from aminet, and copy it to both SYS:Utilities/ and SYS:C/.

I found that the PC0 and PC1 devices are not copied over.  If you are going to be using a lot of pc disks then worth while copying at lease one of those, only problem is you will always get the PC1:???? (example) symbol even if your using an amiga disk.

Sorry, I have to correct this again ;-) There are files copied from the install disk: 68040.library, HDToolbox and HDBackup.

Quite strange not to copy the installer then, considering many apps depend on it. Heh...

Also, the OS 3.1 installer does copy the installer.catalog, so why not Installer? :-)

A bug! In 3.1! Probably the first one uncovered in years!

Or maybe it was expected that all programs using Installer would ship with their own copy on disk - a lot of commercial productivity software did.
