Hello All :-) Question for ya!!!

Hi All.

Just to let you know i had the Amiga 1200 Desktop Dynamite pack in 1995 but sold it after a year ( 1 bad mistake). I am not experienced with the Amiga but not a total newbie either.   :-)  

I'm not sure whether this question is h/w or s/w so here goes.

I recently purchased a second hand Amiga 1200 again and have some questions.

I have Kickstart 3.0 yet i have Workbench 3.1 installed on my HDD. How is this possible? I thought you needed Kickstart 3.1 plugged in to run Workbench 3.1?

Please advise as i know you're all experts.   :-)

No you dont need kick 3.1 to run wb 3.1. I used to run wb 3.1 on 2.04 roms (if my memory serves me correctly).

Not totaly correct! you do need 3.1Roms in order to run OS3.1+ but you can softkick it! this means what the roms does will be done via software! this works ok (all though i dont like it) and it will give you a litle bit slower bootup! another negative thing is that if you happen to crash your HD or decided to format it will need to set up this once again and then you will need to install OS3.0 first then find the softkicker application of your choice and install this and then 3.1! if i were you id buy 3.1roms but your free to your own opinion.

One of my A1200s came with WB3.1 on 3.0 ROMS too. It seemed to make no difference at all.

Are you sure? I definatley used to use a higher version of WB than my roms. I remember, in the older amiga days OS 2.0 would NOT run on 1.3 roms, but i think after that to a certain extent they did. Anyway, to answer the original question - If its working... GREAT! You have answered your own question :-)

And, when i had my a500 with 2.04 roms, im 99.99% sure i used to boot os3.0 straight off the floppy.

Or maybe im wrong.. but it seems the question answered itself here.

You need at least ROM3.0 to run OS3.1 but it can be a softkicked ROM also like in my A3000 with ROM1.4 that sofkicks 3.1. :-D

I belive however that you won't get all out of WB3.1 with only ROM3.0 and there's suppose to be some major bugfixes with the ROM3.1 aswell, also if you plan for further OS uppgrades ROM3.1 is a must.

Strictly speaking the entire OS should be a consistent version/revision, so OS3.1 should be KS3.1 / WB3.1...

Having said that, WB3.1 ran ok on my KS3.0 A1200. There may be some small incompatibilites that lead to unusual instability but I can't say I ever noticed any.

If you intend to go 3.5 / 3.9 then KS3.1 is a must. I'm not sure if anybody is using 3.5/3.9 on KS3.0 - perhaps it's possible.

My Amiga 4000 currently runs just fine with OS 3.1 / KS 3.0 But it will not allow an upgrade to 3.5
I´m not running any softkicker.

;-) As I understand it, most of the OS 3.1 features do not require the extra bits that comprise the difference between Kickstarts 3.0 and 3.1.  However, a few of them do.  Running OS 3.1 on KS 3.0 is very common, but occasionally, you'll get errors due to this, but I couldn't tell you what they'd be.

So, it's best to get real 3.1 ROM's in the long run, but it isn't really urgent.

I ran wb3.1 on 3.0 roms for a long, long time. It was not until I ran into AmigaAMP which required 3.1 roms, that I softkicked the machine to 3.1.

I have been doing that ever since, and now it softkicks from 3.0->3.1, 3.1->3.9 so it is a few reboots when you first turn on your computer, but it is doable.

The only problem with the softkicking thing (I presume) is that if the computer crashes badly enough, it is simply crashed. Rebooting it will make it do absolutely nothing. I have had to turn it off and on a few times to get it to boot again.

On KS3.1 you can go right up to OS3.9.

Oh year , reason i'm here... have a joke for ya'all...

Mate of mine told me the other night after a load of swallies down the boozer he got home pissed as a fart.... well he actually said he was wankered but i'm not allowed to say that on here....

As I recall, the primary purpose of 3.1 ROMs was to release version 3 of AmigaOS for non-AGA machines.  Bugfixes, enhancements and extra datatypes were just gravy.
