Next Steps - More EXPERTISE needed...
« on: July 06, 2007, 02:10:14 PM »
Really the main thing now is to get WinUAE to quit trying to boot from every disk I point it to.  I've not heard anyone mention this that's given me help, but if I mount a disk with system on it, it boots from there.  The problem in point is the SimStation Workbench disk, which has a problem.  On SimStation, it recycles through to boot constantly and never comes up.  "Fortunately" on WinUAE it boots to a CLI, but returns "invalid resident library" if I issue "loadwb."  OTOH, commands work and I was able to back it up to an HDF file by command line.

Now, I need to be able to troubleshoot it, then copy it to a new IDE drive to return to SimStation.  For that purpose, I need to be able to mount it and boot to the WinUAE system, not the thing itself.

I've had lots of help with this so far and have made lots of progress.  I appreciate the input and patience of you guys who've held up the flag for these many, lonely years.  I promise pictures and details on this marvelous 75 lb. relic once I've gotten her back in fightin' trim.

Kind regards to all,
Dave

If I understand correctly, you have a real Amiga hard disk connected and a virtual HDF, both configured in UAE, and you want to control which one it boots from. Is that correct? If so, you just hold down both mouse buttons after starting the emulation to get in to the early startup screen, and then select which drive you want to boot from and click "boot".

Sounds good.  Let me go step by step to see if we are on the same page:

1. I start WinUAE Launcher.
2. I go to WinUAE Config and mount the disk(s) am working with.
3. I press "start" on the mount drives requestor and it boots from the wrong one.
I assume this is the point I hold down both mouse buttons to choose?

I don't have the machine in front of me (I am back at work) so I cannot test at the moment.  However, it appears there would be a conflict between pressing the left mouse button on "Start," then pressing both buttons.

Thanks for your help!

Regards,
Dave

Wouldnt another way be to the add the drives one by one and use hd-tools to make them non-bootable

@Mallette
You need to press both mouse buttons down immediately after you start the emulation, before it attempts to boot from a drive. Keep them held down until the grey early startup screen appears.

@JJ
Yes that would work, but would be much more complicated than just selecting the boot device.

Alright, maybe I'll have time to give it a shot when I get home this evening.

I cannot make it non-bootable from HDToolbox if I cannot get there (wb won't load).

Anyway, I'll report on the results.  Thanks again for the help...it is greatly appreciated.  I'm on a quest to save history!

On UAE config sheet, when you select the drives you want to mount, simply choose a higher priority to the drive you wish to boot from.

Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

If you mean the boot priority column, I changed it to 1, then to 6 and it still booted from that drive.

0 on all drives listed, N/A on those I mount.

I tried the holding both mouse keys down.  It still booted to the mounted disk.   :madashell:

I note that if I change the boot priority in the "Properties" dialog of the WinUAE config, it does not change from "n/a" in the window.

Something isn't right here.

OK, I got it.  Sheesh.  Why did not somebody tell me the boot priorities were reverse of (at least my own) intuition??  I change the WinUAE Work to "1" and got the drive mounted without it booting.

I've forgotten almost everything...

Now, I need to troubleshoot the SimStation boot issue in WinUAE.

It quit booting after I attempted to copy a directory from it to a SCSI disk I'd formated.  Whole thing went black and out as soon as I dropped it and it would not reboot.

I get HD activity, then the power flicker, then nothing.

When I boot this drive to WinUAE, I DO get a CLI that works (thank goodness) but "loadwb" returns "invalid resident library."

The OS is 3.0, but I am not quite sure which version.  It is a late model 4000.

Additional Info:
Library dates are July, 1996.

What kickstart version you are using with UAE?
