EGS software
« on: July 06, 2007, 12:17:23 AM »
I just set my Amiga 3000T backup which has been down for a few years.  I am running 3.9 with boing bag 2.  I also put 2.1 on one of my partition and plan to install it on a 3rd partition.  My problem is EGS software, I have tried to install 7.1 from the aminet set and unable to get it to install on my HD.  I keep getting Disk or file not found.  I installed the program unto 4 disk with the same problem.  I also used LHA and tried to install with putting everything in the right place, big mistake on my part.  I saved all my files but had to reformat that partition.  Everything is back to square one.  I would like to know which version of EGS software is the latest or best.  I am using 2.1 for some older programs and hardware that works with 2.1 and 3.9.  I use the IV24 with PAR card and other hardware.  I like the EGS displays and my CyberGFX software.  Just would like the best of all worlds, after this I would like to install WB1.3 or 1.4 on a partition.  Just having fun with my A3000T.  All programs I bought a long time ago at a place far far away.

Hi, I was never big on egs software, I might suggest something other than gpv IV24. Even a Picasso II will give you so much more. If you have not used your 3000t in years you will be in for a treat if you get a different video card. I love 3000t's

I have the Spectrum card 28/24 also in the Amiga, with the IV24, PAR card, DPS and GVP 040/40 with 32 megs and 18 megs on the motherboard.  It's a great computer and I will never sell it.

EGS files that work
« Reply #4 on: July 06, 2007, 03:36:40 AM »
The EGS 7.1 files you got from aminet won't install properly unless you manually edit the install script. The only version I have gotten to work with my spectrum 28/24 card is from Installers Heaven. The version is 6.2 and the files are good. You can also get another version from the remenants of the GVP site but the dms file for disk 3 is corrupt. I managed to get a good file from the Internet Archive but this version of the EGS software didn't work on my A2500 and the other one did.

I managed to get both the EGS and CybergraphX software going at once but it was really unstable and the EGS workbench wouldn't work at all but the rest of the EGS software did if I started it from a native Amiga workbench but if I started it from a CybergraphX workbench the card would output garbage until I turned the machine off and on again. I now have both systems on different partitions. CyberGraphX or Picasso 96 is the way to go if you want a decent workbench. The EGS workbench only works well in 16 colors. Anything beyond that is way too slow. The paint program isn't too bad once you get beyond the primitive interface. I use a lot of older software in my A2500 and compatibility is important to me but if you're running OS 3.9, I would use CyberGraphX or Picasso 96 and keep EGS on a separate partition for the occasional moment you might want to use it.
A2500 owned since 1993 with A2630/DKB 2632, DKB Megachip, GVP EGS Spectrum, A2320 and GVP HC+8 on the inside and a DCTV on the outside. A4000D with CSPPC, Cybervision 64 and a Flicker Magic flicker fixer. A4000T Toaster Flyer & CSMKII. All systems completly retro and classic and mostly used to do geometic art as in my avatar.

EGS stands for--I believe--Extended Graphics System. It is an early RTG/Workbench emulation system put out by GVP for their Spectrum 24/28 and 110/24 graphics cards. It is both the drivers for the cards and a suite of graphics programs and utilities. This was one of the early Workbench emulations and, in the context of the times, wasn't too bad but both the Picasso and CyberGraphX Workbenches are 1000% better--like you can have a 24 bit Workbench that's fast and usable with them.

@oldman3000

if you have a GVP Spectrum 28/24 download Picasso96 and give it a go.

It should work much better than old EGS software and will allow you to run more apps and games.
