I'm impressed by AmiKit
« on: June 19, 2007, 08:36:14 PM »
I sit here corrected. I've to crawl the dust. I have to admit that I was wrong.

On what accounts, you might wonder. Well on only one, being my believe that it's impossible to emulate an Amiga on any non-Amiga hardware in a useable manner. Because today I discovered that it can be done, even on rather modest hardware.

Right now I'm typing this post using IBrowse from the basic AmiKit installation on my new 'old' Dell Optiplex GX260 (base config with onboard sound/video, 256 MB RAM, WinXP-Pro, 20GB Mem). With all the bells and whistles of AmiKit up and running it feels even more responsive than the Amiga 40000T with PicassoIV.

While typing this, AmigaAMP plays a MP3 in the background, smoothly! This is amazing.

So, keen to get the system down and have good arguments that 'it still doesn't work' I dove into the cupboard with CD-s and pulled-out Pinball Illusions. And it worked! As well as on the CD32, back in 1996ish.

Now all I need to do is two things:
1) Find my registration key for Dopus5 (was it printed on the disk or the manual?).
2) Make a donation to the autohor of AmiKit.
Get a SAM, while you can! The new AMIGA is here!

I too am impressed (automatic update is really cool!) but unfortunately that doesn't mean I like it though. It just doesn't feel right to me. It's too much. I guess I could just take out the things I don't like but then I like it better to do it the other way around and build my own system.

Oh wait that's just what I did with my real Miggy! ;-)

Pinball Illusions I tested was the CD32 version, thus AGA. Both audio and graphics seemed in-sync!

The previous times I tested WinUAE (on Duron 750 / Duron 1400 both with 512+ MB RAM and 32+ MB GeForce 2 / ATI equivalent both with Soundblaster Live!) I couldn't get a single game to work properly; either grafics problems or sound being out of sync, there always was something wrong.

Now, I do know that Pinball Illusions is not the most demanding game ever. So I've to digg into my pile of CDs and have to find three games that should push the limits a bit further:
1) Oldtimer AGA (with the Testdrive option)
2) Virtual Karting
3) That ACP/TCP racing game... I forgot the name of.

But so far I've not find an argument against Amikit on this Dell.

Oh, I forgot to mention, the GX260 has a 2 GHz Pentium IV.

@Flashlab:

There you've got a good point. Now I'm can be rather lazy when it comes to 'configuring' a computer. Most of the times I'm more than happy to use the base installation, not going much further than changing the background. So for lazy asses like me Amikit is welcome as it gives a nice looking desktop without the hassle of tweaking all things.

The downside of this I do know. At the moment I've no real clue on HOW it is done. I guess a lot of the speed is down to AHI and Picasso96. If I'm nosy enough, I will dive into it later. For now I just enjoy!

Ahh...so you mean old Dopus 5.5 on floppy's?

I was refering to the Dopus Magellan II cd which I have here

The serial might be somewhere else on if you have an older Dopus version :)

This might be a golden oportunity to do some cleaning up among your tucked away Amiga stuff  :-D

Hehehe... My wife is laughing at me as I'm really dis-organized. That is, I keep my stuff at several places but never sorted. That means a big search.

As to Dopus... I've got floppies and a CD. The CD is for Magelan I believe, the floppies are indeed 5.5, iirc.

Well, I guess I will be ending up browsing through the pile of stuff, maybe I'd better start sorting as well.

Fellow Amigans:

I just got amiga forever...I started using it (on my pc 900mhz)and was impressed. The screen looks amazing..and the memory so big. I ran aladdin 4d (which in amiga can take hours per render)under emulation..and was impressed to see a tough render..render in just a few seconds..amazing.
i was totally amazed at how fast the render took on Winuae.
And on top..Is like having an amiga with 256 mb ram and a super accelerator (much much more faster than 060).
I was impressed by amiga forever.
cheers!!!

Whatever your version of Opus 5 (floppies or CD), the serial is printed inside the manual.

@Rednova:

Just for fun: Run Sysinfo :-) My setup reports to be just under 40 times faster than a A4000 with 25 MHz 68040. Compared to the A600: 362 times faster.

Yes, but you do realise that running SysInfo within an emulated environment is next to useless.

Sorry to piss on your cornflakes...

I too, am very impressed with Amikit.  I have my A3000T with a mediator and voodoo 5, 060, 54M ram, DVD drive, etc etc etc.  she's quite keen on me, and me on her, but this Amikit could stop people from buying a real Amiga!  I say boycott Amikit!

j/k, great compilation and I can't wait to get amikit on my real Amiga.
