*sigh* can't make everyone happy on eBay
« on: June 19, 2007, 03:11:08 AM »
Sorry for the rant but I am a little ticked off.  Well just got another negative due to a moron Amiga user.  I sold a GVP ROM and I charged him an extra dollar for shipping  (since he is on the other side of the planet from me) and he got pissed! Due to the postage was lower than what he paid.  (my auction stated $5+ and I charged him $6) He does not understand the concept of Shipping AND HANDLING.  Tried to explain it to him.  He was mostly upset over the extra dollar so I offered to refund him it, and would of even offered a few extra $ but he decided to leave a negative instead.  He now plans to escalate it with eBay, should be fun!  I told him what the handling consists of, which to me is:  packaging materials, labels, tape, bubble wrap, peanuts, gas to drive to post office, time in the long lines and filling out tedious customs forms, and paypal fees.  The last one really got him riled up.  Apparently it is against the rules, but I was just throwing it in there with the rest.  Bottom line he wanted to pay just the post rate and wanted the rest back!  Unbelievable!

Hahahah gotta love eBay and morons.  Just can't make everyone happy can you?  Well I am still at 99% so thats good.  Everyone has been happy with me but there are the morons here and there that make it interesting!

I know what you mean. This sort of thing is exactly why I sell a lot less on ebay than I used to. I also can't believe the crap some sellers try and pawn off as "Mint" or "Like New". I'm talking about stuff that should have gone in the garbage it's so bad.  Overall though I've done alright, I've been on ebay since '99 and I've only been bitten a couple times.

The feedback system is certainly flawed. I've let things go before where I should have left a neutral or neg just to avoid the retaliation. I'm sure we all have.

@TjLaZer

That really sucks... :-(
If I were you I would leave a negative to the buyer as well, or at least modify a feedback if you already left it.

@Jeff
How very true. Once I bought a DVD on ebay which turned out to be a pirated copy which the seller attempted to make look like an original. I never left the seller any feedback and he never did leave any for me either because I did not want to get a negative in retaliation.

Dude I know.  My worst one is I am out $550 on a portable Janguar I bid on!  It arrived broken and seller would not do anything to help, he suggested I contact the original maker.  I sent it to him and have never heard from him since.  $550.  Now that is a reason to get my panties in a bunch, not a few green backs...  Some people.

This is very unfortunate for you. I understand your frustration. You are trying to conduct business and someone tarnishes your reputation over something absolutely childish.

Against the rules? It's an option when you create the auction! You can add in handling charges for additional shipping expenses.

What a fool.

Yeah well I try to do the best I can.  I had already left a positive the day before!  How lucky for him!  I did in the heat of the moment add a reply to it and called him an A$$.  Not sure what ebay will do with that one!  But I was pissed.  Been a very rough month for me too...

Charging extra to cover paypal fees isn't against the rules. An ebay tech supporter told me to do it once.

I think you should have made it clear about the shipping & handling fees before the auction against this kind of trouble (I didn't check your auction, so I don't know if you already did.). I usually tolerate 'handling' fees upto 10$, but some sellers just abuse it and it just ticks me off. especially if the item is not well packed. It also depends on the stuff you send. Some bigger stuff would need higher amounts of handling fees (I had whole A3000's shipped to japan a couple of times.). while smaller items like rom chips shouldn't have high handling prices. the definition of 'high' is the problem here, and should be made clear.

Of course buzzing for one buck is just nonsense. I bought roms from you and your charges were quite reasonable (in my terms), and the items well packed. Usually I don't leave feedback if I'm not happy with the shipping prices/attitude if the item is working. Now ebay has detailed seller rating, which lets the buyer to rate sellers shipping prices. If the item is working, it's possible to leave a positive but give a rating of very unreasonable shipping price if you're not happy. So the neg was completely unnecessary and hastily, especially since you've offered a refund anyway.

I know it was only $1, but to be honest I would not be happy about a seller charging extra fees not stated on the auction. Now, I know you offered to refund him so the negative was unnecessary. But I do think buyers have a right to complain if sellers add extra charges not stated in the auction. I would be tempted to complain too as a matter of principle, but I would only leave negative feedback if the seller refused to refund the extra charges.

I think that the problem is not necessarily the definition, it is the amount. As long as I am happy with the final cost, and that cost doesn't change from the time that I win to the time that I pay, I don't care what the seller uses the money for, whether it's PayPal fees, packing, petrol etc.

Hey TJ, since you live a state away from me now, can you charge me an extra dollar too, if I go pick it up????

In the US, you cannot charge extra to cover PayPal fees.  I have confirmed this several times with both eBay and PayPal (one in the same now.)  I'd guess this has something to do with credit card companies' requirements for the same.

But eBay's feedback system has been updated to include a rating system for things like packaging, shipping costs, etc.  It's too bad that someone's negative feedback cannot be overruled because of sheer stupidity.  I'm holding steady at 100%, mostly buying, but I'm sure that will drop once I run into one of these morons.

I just hope idiots like that don't cause people to lose faith... we need people pushing their Amiga wares so others can benefit!

To want more than what the bottom line says when the action has ended would piss me off... A buyer must always know how much postal/ handling he has to pay in advance. That's law. In the EU ... Don't know bout' the US ...
