Need a good MP3 player for my A1200
« on: June 23, 2003, 08:27:41 PM »
I want to know what a good MP3 player for my Amiga 1200 (which it's specs are listed below) would be?

I've tried AmigaNetRadio (Don't run, it only shows empty black spots on the screen)... Prayer2 starts up, but it won't play MP3's.

I'm getting really frustrated!  :-(

no soundcard?  eek.  You'll need the AHI drivers, and some luck, to get anything over 22050 sampled mp3s to work properly.  I never managed it with my 040 based machine, though I'm not sure if the CPU is holding things up, PIO on disk I/O, or Paula.

A soundcard might well be a great idea, although AHI (which AFAIR is bundled with OS3.5) should work with the basic Paula chip.

A 68060 is as good as it gets for horsepower - unless we're talking about the PPC version of AHI here - so you'll probably struggle to get better quality.

You might want to try Eyetech, as they used to make an MP3 player cartridge that plugged into your parallel port.

With an 060 you won't have any proglems. You can play MP3's at 44khz, in 14 bit, with Paula Calibration.  You'll be amazed if you haven't seen it.
Try Amplifier. It's pretty similar to  Winamp.
You might not have the settings configured  to the best Paua sound you can get,, and have to set them yourself. I haven't used that program cause I don't have a fast enouph processor, so can't help you with that, but read some stuff it's fun. The sound is really good when compared to the "normal " sound one is used from old flopyy disk games, it's said to be near CD quality. There was some talk that humans could only distinguish 14bits so. But there are more factors to sound quality of course.

[EDIT] You can get Amplifier on Aminet

I personally recommend Amiga Amp

http://www.amigaamp.de

Skins, Plugins and loads more too

If you have a PPC based amiga use the WarpOS setting. You will need AHI version 5 installed too
(Available from Aminet)

If not look for mpega library if you have an 060

Good luck

I downloaded and installed AHI the other night (I don't have PPC for my Amiga 1200 **yet**).

I also have mpega060.library (is that the right name?)

I can NOT access the Audio preferences from with Prayer2.0 ... why?

You must rename it to mpega.library. I'm using Prayer2 and it runs flawlessly at 44kHz. You must use any 31kHz screen -DBPal, etc.-  so you can play at this rate.

Other players are SongPlayer, DeliTracker, Play16... The last one is CLI based, so you could use it to test if everything is in its place (AHI, mpega.lib, etc.)

@Mikey_C

I just downloaded AmigaAmp and it looks very nice. It's GUI is identical to the Amplifier included with OS3.9, but the authors are different. Are these players related?

Anyway, the problem I have is getting the thing to play for more than a second or so.

Any suggestions?

Cheers,

JaX

With 060 you will have no problems,

I use Songplayer with Paula 14bit, full quality, full bitrate
on a a1200 fitted in my car.
Can be controled with arexx with minor scripting.

I tested the performance of this system after reading your post,
and found I could run Songplayer twice at full quality,
one with paula sound and one with soundcard(AHI) at full bitrate

The system is A1200 68060/50 32Mb

I also tried this on my A4000 68060/50+PPC
and found I could run Songplayer three times at full quality
with no problems at all and the system was still responsive..
