Deluxe Galaga audio and mode promotion
« on: June 13, 2007, 05:53:00 PM »
Hi there,
I seem to be having a problem with the aminet AGA version of deluxe galaga on my WB3.0 A1200. The archive has been extracted as normal to the HDD and the appropriate library copied to LIBS:, yet, for some reason, im not getting any of the amazing sound effects or music that should play with Deluxe Galaga. I've verified that the audio is working fine on the amiga, and that the volume is turned up in the game. Unusually, the v1.5 version of Deluxe Galaga (From a cover disk that I have) does in fact play the audio, except the gfx seems to be screwed up on this particular system.

Also, unfortunately, Deluxe Galaga (As well as some other games that I have) totally ignore the MultiScan mode that I have set with mode promotion and VGAOnly turned on, and default straight back to the 15Khz screen, which can only be viewed (Successfully) via a TV. Any suggestions on any software to correct this (If there is any such software)?

Thanks for any help,
Hodgkinson.

Deluxe galaga can't be promoted to any screen..it works only on a a 15hz screen pal or ntsc
on the other way you can change settings on that game...leave joysick button pushed while you doubleclick icon game..

bye, Laser

Due to bugs in the operating system, MOST games bypass most of the operating system and bang on the AGA registers directly.  In order to get those game to work on a VGA monitor you must buy a scan-doubler.  A scan-doubler is a hardware device that receives the image at 15KHz and outputs the same image twice at twice the horizontal sync.  If you get a scan-doubler with a deinterlacer you'll not only be able to play games but also hardware-banging productivity software as well.

Thanks for the replies.

I've just had another go at getting the deluxe galaga audio to work correctly. The AGA version of Deluxe Galaga (Probably V2.6 A) downloaded from the Deluxe Galaga website works fine with regards to the audio, but unfortunatly it has a random tendency to hang around level 11.
The AGA version of deluxe galaga from aminet plays fine, but the audio normally doesn't work.

Now heres the odd bit... :-)

Run the Deluxe Galaga from the Deluxe Galaga website, then run the Aminet version without rebooting, and the audio in the Aminet deluxe galaga version works! Reboot, and the audio in the aminet version dissappers, until the Deluxe Galaga website version is run (And closed...) and the aminet version audio starts working again.

I've tried all the libs from both versions, and I've tried transferring the audio files from the D.Galaga website version into the aminet version, along with the modules list, and nothing seems to fix the problem.

Any advice?
Thanks,
Hodgkinson.

Its been a while since I last posted on this thread.
Has anyone experienced the same problem with the audio in the meantime?

Any ideas?

Hodgkinson.

What OS/Kickstart are you using there?

I think the last time I played Deluxe Galaga AGA I was still on Kickstart 3.0 and Workbench 3.0 .  I now have Kickstart 3.1 and Workbench 3.9 .  Do you want me to try it out again after I get home from the university tonight?

Use the WHDLoad version.  I haven't played much, but haven't had any problems.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

@ SamuraiCrow

Im using WB3.0 and KS3.0 here. Trying it out on a different version of the OS wont be much use to me for the time being, but thanks for the offer.

Hmmm...
When I get my other A1200 running (Might never get around to it...) i'll have to try the game out on there, in case theres some weird hardware fault in one of the A1200 custom chips, perhaps. (Im sure I had the same problem on my A1200T with the same WB and KS...Seem to have the idea that I tried out this latest version of the game just to find the audio diddn't work, before reverting back to the old version).

Has anyone ever got this game to correctly on WB3.0 with KS39.106 ?

Thanks,
Hodgkinson.

Im trying to think of reasons to take my A1200 with me to Uni next year...And this is the best idea I can think of yet...providing I can solve this audio problem (mmmm...dual player with LCD...mmmm)

BTW, Im pretty sure now that I had exactly the same audio problem on the A1200T system. Thats the only reason I can think of for reverting to the older, slightly crash prone version of the game that I was playing previously.

NB. Both the tower and the A1200D have KS3.0, WB3.0, and the A1200D is now running on the same Blizzard 030 IV that used to be in the tower. Oh, and im afraid I can't do much with the A1200T any more...The OS is buggered and the system (For some reason) won't even try to boot from floppies now the accelerator card is removed (/me suspects a jumper somewhere needs tweaking...)

Help appreciated,
Hodgkinson.

My advice would be to run SnoopDOS and look for clues there.

Deluxe Galaga ran successfully on my A1200 with Kickstart 3.0 and Kickstart 3.1 but it was many many years ago.

You should try loading Deluxe Galaga from the floppy.
