OS4 on tour - why so little news?
« on: June 22, 2003, 06:50:37 PM »
I was wondering why there are so few posts about the OS4 on tour. It must be the biggest thing this far from the "official" side, but aside from a bunch of screen shots and some show pictures, there has not been much info from the visitors. Why is that? Or have I missed it?

There must be lots of things to report about!

How fast does OS4 feel, how fast does it boot, how stable/prone to crash is it, how does software perform, what software runs on it, what software did they show, etc, etc, etc ...

What did they say during the presentation, estimations of release dates, etc, etc, etc ...

Show reports please! :-)

Heh, all information filtered through the Information Minister!  :-P

But seriously, I would like these questions to be answered by some of *the visitors*.

>How fast does OS4 feel

The only report regarding the speed of OS4 I read
was from ppcnux.de. OS4 felt quite slow during
window operations (opening, closing, moving etc)
but that seems to be because the intuition.library
hasn't been ported to PPC yet and OS4 did not have
a JIT at the shows.

CybPPC version end of September. AmigaOne
version maybe end of the year.

I was at the show in Switzerland. But I have nothing to tell. Its more or less OS3.9 for PPC, like MorphOS is OS3.1 for PPC. Its very slow on the Cyberstorm, but I guess thats because its beta and not everything is ported to PPC-code.

Afair he (Jürgen Schober from Pontdesign, Austria) runned the OS and nothing moe, but he presented all tools an prgs comming with the OS. But it was not very impressing for me. BUT he mentioned that not all modules are completly compiled for the PPC and it is still beta.

He had to reboot only one time and he said before that he has to do it if he shows this proggy. (Can't remember any more which).

The menues are now transparent andcan be configured to show up where the pointer is.

The presentaion was on a A4000 desktop with Cyberstorm. The rest of the configutation I missed.

He did IMHO a very good presentaion, but wehat can you expect from a presentation of an OS?

I will buy it despite the slownlyness (?correct?) for my A4000T and my Cyberstorm (if I'll ever see my board again, its currenly at DCE :-(.
But I won't buy an Amiga-One.

Markus

(Sorry for the tipmisser but its 00:48 here in basle)

@ Markus_Bieler

Thanks for the info! :-)

Did you get the impression that it is close to a final release version?

To me it sounds like it still is in a pretty early stage; they do not demo any real applications running on the OS, still some essential parts are in 68k, perhaps not quite optimized and fine tuned (hence the slow appearence), the JIT is not there, etc.

I'm sure they will get everything sorted out, the question is how long time it will take. There has been speculation about a CSPPC release in September, but I wonder ...

Anyway, thanks again for the info! :-)

@ Alkemyst

In summary, what does it say?

(I rather not visit that site, because everytime I do I get a feeling that I support the really ugly moves some months ago  from some of the people behind that site (and a certain company in the Amiga community)).

Otherwise I would have been surprised! ;-)
That's why it's interesting to hear reports from more ordinary users. :-)
