Name that Tune! (PLEASE!)
« on: June 07, 2007, 08:58:39 PM »
Back in the late 90's/early 00's there was a song that I heard occationally.  It was, I guess, best described as an Electronica tune.  It was fairly downbeat and sparse.

There was a single female vocal that sang "I know, I know I can count on you".  It could possibly be Candi Staton, it was very similar.

At this point most people mention one of the numerous remixes of "You got the love" by The Source.  It definately wasn't that.

I honestly can't remember when this was, it's so long ago now.  But every now and then the song come back to me and I can't stop thinking about it.  Tonight is one of those times.

Can anyone help?  It's driving me nuts again

As soon as I try to imagine that vocal I get "You Got The Love" mental block.

I do have a nagging feeling that I'll have heard it though.

You mean "Your Love" by Jamie Principle.  Sorry pet hate of mine that "Your Love" with an acapella gets credited as an orignal work by The Source all the time.
[/Angry-old-raver]

Anyway, the tune you are after is......... (Gimme a few mins to get "Your Love" out of my head.)  Plus, there have been many tunes with that "I Know" vocal though I am sure the one you mean is a garage tune. (Proper US Garage, not that horrible London crap)

edit:

"I Know" by New Atlantic, a proper full on hands in the air piano anthem!

edit2:

Have the original release on 3Beat from 1991 sat here after a quick filch through my pride and joy.

It's not for sale. ;-)

edit3:

Sacrilege!! :-o  The 2007 "Remix".  Why can't these talentless people leave classics alone?

edit4:

Feck me, I thought that dirge was bad.  Is the 1999 "Remix" the one you had in mind?  "Trance" my great big hairy arse! Yuk!

Hmmm.... I never said it was originally by the Source.

On the other hand, I don't believe it was originally by JP either.

My understanding is the vocal was lifted from the soundtrack Candi Staton did for a weight loss video.  ;-)

This aricle appears to agree:

Having played concerts in Britain since, she now knows what a massive impact her voice made when the Source's version of You Got the Love went top 10 in 1991, but at the time she had no idea she had even recorded such a song. "They were calling my house saying I had a number one record in England, and I said, 'What song? I haven't released any song.' When they told me it was You Got the Love, I said I'd never made a record called that. Then I got off the phone and realised - it was the one from the diet video! Which was never supposed to be put on a record at all." Staton's laughter grows the more she explains it. The soundtrack to a thousand raves, with its spiritual lines, "Sometimes I feel like saying Lord I just don't care/ But you've got the love I need to see me through" was recorded as the anthem for a film about the world's fattest man on his conquest to shed a tonne.

"He was the biggest guy I ever saw. He couldn't wear underwear, he had to wear tents. When he lost a couple of hundred pounds he was so proud, he called me and said; 'Candi, I've bought my first pair of drawers!' When they took him to Nassau, to go on this Bahamian diet, they had to clear the front row of first class just to get him on the plane. They had to forklift him into it."

Staton agreed to record a song the programme-makers had planned for her and, as they couldn't afford to pay her, they gave her half the publishing and copyright - a move she would come to appreciate when the royalty cheques started rolling in years later. She says she still didn't get all her dues when it first entered the UK charts, and she had to involve an attorney. "The English releases can't rip me off any more - hopefully," she says now. She still has that diet video somewhere in her basement, and her eyes glow wildly at the suggestion that it could make her a fortune on eBay.

So, no need to get angry anymore, sir.   ;-)

I was talking about the '97 version of "You got the Love" which is nothing like "Your Love".  I can see why you would get pissed off though, the other version is a blatent rip-off ala Timbaland.

That is definately the sample, but not the tune itself.  Although from what I heard, it appeals to the wannabe raver in me (I wasn't even in secondary school by the time the scene collapsed).

That's not the one, although it's highly likely to be one of the others on that release.  Like I said, it was a fairly sparse and downtempo.  And it was definately free of all that Pete Tong gimmicky dance fluff.

At least I have a starting point now.  There is a chance that the version I'm after was realeased on a compilation album.  Thanks for the help.

I vaguely remember a garage/prog house track with the "I know" vocal.  I'll do my best to find it for you.
