NAR... Best Mac software to transfer VHS tape to DVD?
« on: June 02, 2007, 05:26:26 PM »
Hi all, I have an older Sony VHS-C analog type video camera and was wondering if anyone knows, or can recommend, the best type of MAC software to buy to transfer the taped video to dvd?... I would like the software to be digital capable too in case I buy a digital video camera someday. Sorry for asking here but I don't belong to any Mac forums 'cause the peeps are so biased! hahahaha. Thanks in advance!

Doesn't iMovie allow you to do that?
Back to action!

I would use whatever software comes with your analogue input hardware to get the videos on to your Mac, then use iDVD to create a DVD containing the videos.

Howdy!  Yes, as a Mac owner I too have encountered a fair amount of bias in the Mac forums.  Maybe it's karma paying me back for when Amiga was soo cool back in the day and we could look down with disdain upon the DOS boxes ;-)

Anyhow, you'll first need some hardware to get analog video into the digital realm.  Lots of cheap camcorders nowadays have an analog input feature.  Your camera's manual will explain how to do this.  Then you just hook the camera up to the Mac's firewire port and import into iMovie.  If you're a posh mac user you could use Final Cut, but I'm not so I'm stuck with iMovie, the one which came with OSX 10.3.  When you upgrade to 10.4 by buying the DVD (versus getting it with a new Mac) you don't get iMovie for free anymore, you have to buy it separate.  The downside of this is that 10.3 iMovie doesn't natively handle widescreen video correctly (as from my Panasonic GS400 camcorder).

If you don't have any hardware, you could just buy yourself a Dazzle DV bridge, which has all sorts of inputs on it.  It also comes with software.

So to sum up, you need some sort of interface hardware to get the analog video into digital, such as a camcorder with this function or a Dazzle DV bridge or a Pinnacle video capture card, and then iMovie which comes with the Mac, or other more advanced software.

OK, so I already have the software?! I have never used iMovie or iDVD.  :-?  I just opened up iMovie and it has something called "make a magic movie". Is that just simplified software to capture the audio and video from a source? The screen then says it can send the captured video and audio to iDVD for burning. That'll work no problem? Can iMovie let me edit all the video for things like transitions, menus, text on the video, special effects, etc.?

OK, the part I didn't think about was the hardware interface. I have an older Pinnacle package with a cable that has an analog input on one end and USB on the other end. The package was for a PC only. Can I just use that cable and the iMovie software to capture? That would be great!   :-D

Thanks for the replies!

Are there any good Mac forums anywhere?  I don't like asking too many Mac questions here, but when I went looking for Mac sites to join, I could only find snobs or the apple support discussions that have no personality and just act as a question and answer format.

I guess I have been spoiled by having all the great Amiga users here to "hang out" with for the last 8 years (I lurked for 2 or 3 before I registered).  I am not saying that all the members or visitors here are people I would invite to my home, as I have had my share of moments when I was so frustrated with the crap being written that I just wanted to shoot the idiot on the other side of the screen, but for the most part, I have to say that this site and forums has been the best place to visit and has some of the most helpful people, of anywhere on the internet that I have found.  Give yourselves a pat on the back and a pint in the hand.

Three cheers for the Amiga users from Amiga.org!  :-D
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)
