AmigaOS runs on Mac MINI! Moana Project revealed!
« on: May 31, 2007, 09:47:26 AM »
(These news are of some days ago but passed unnoticed on Amiga.org)

In a discussion which was presented as exhibit in the court trial that is opposing Amiga Inc. and Hyperion between the CEO of Amiga INc. Bill Mc.Ewen and Nicola Morocutti representative of ACube Systems Italy, the italian manufacturer revealed that AmigaOS is ready to run on Macintosh hardware.

ACube are also manufacturers of Samantha Sam440EP Motherboard.

http://merlancia.us/amiga-hyperion/35-5decmcewenexhibit5show_case_doc.pdf

At page 31-32 of the pdf file.

YES! What you all think it was impossible it is now a reality!

AMIGA OS RUNS ON MACINTOSH PPC! :-o

It has been spotted by Bill himself running on MacMINI PPC clocked at 1.42 GHz (The fastest Amiga ever!).

And if the Moana (this is the codename of the project) will be sold on the market, then we all can purchase cheap PPC Macintosh hardware on EBAY or on second-hand stores, and run AmigaOS on it.

If you have Mac PPC based you are lucky!

Despite the lack of any Amiga Hardware available we could again run AmigaOS and can run it on very good manufactured hardware such as that one from Apple!

-----

In that discussion mr. Morocutti asked Bill Mc. Ewen to grant to ACube the licence to sell AmigaOS 4.0 bundled with Moana (the program which loads AmigaOS onto Macintosh hardware).

Unfortunately Bill Mc. Ewen wiped out without answering.

Recently Amiga Inc. represented by Bill Mc. Ewen preferred to sue Hyperion in order to get back all licences and source code of AmigaOS 4.0.

We hope that whoever will win the court trial (HYperion or Amiga Inc.) then will decide to grant ACube to licence Moana!

-----

WARNING!

In another exhibit it has been stated that Friedens have all the plans to let AmigaOS run on CELL Processors.

Cell processors are those CPUS equpping Playstation 3.      ;-)

AMIGA OS RUNS ON MACINTOSH PPC!

Didn't they say that would be impossible since Apple would not give out information needed to do the port?  What's changed since they told everyone that it wasn't possible to do a OS4 port to Macs?   Oh yeah, they ran out of Teron mobos to sell with OS4.

Yeah, it's annoying how Apple won't release any information to allow OSs to be ported to run on Mac hardware. A version of Linux for the Mac would be great!

Oh hang on...

Read Saimo's answer, post #29:

Thread on amigaworld

AV's answer, post #48:
Same thread:

"Indeed this is the case.
The (unfinished) MacMini port was done using the sourcecode from Linux,BSD and Darwin as reference (not a single line of code was copied).
And it wasn't a pretty experience.
The Friedens said it was an hell to do because they knew what the situation was."

I got a Mac Mini a couple years ago 'cause of all the different OS's I could run on it. It came with Tiger and Panther. I've been predicting OS4 running on Mac for quit some time!  ;-) (not holding my breath due to lawsuit though).

What I love about the Mini is the size! Plus you can add all the stackables! Plus, the built in Ethernet, Wireless, Bluetooth, CD-RW/DVD-RW. The PPC version only has 1 RAM slot though and 1GB sticks are somewhat expensive even on Ebay.

I bought a 15" widescreen LCD for it and I use it right at the end if the kitchen table (I have all the cables  bundled up real nice so you can hardly see them). It's like a little workstation in the house.

OS4 on my Mac Mini would be the cat's meow!!! That's why I bought one while they were still CHEAP and available! BTW, I had never used a Mac before I got the Mini! Over 20 years as a PC (and C64) user - man, was I frustrated for a while! Also, Amiga emulation has been WAY easier on the Mac than on any of my PC's.

I bought Civilization IV on the cheap a few weeks back when CompUSA was going out of business here in Michigan but can't play it yet 'cause I only have 256 MB of RAM. DOH! The game did let me watch the intro and it was gorgeous!

Here's what would be cool....   OS4 on the Mini running Mac emulation! Or, dual boot. Maybe even boot between OS4, MacOS and Windows.  :-D

OK, enough of my morning ramblings...  more coffee!

It was pretty funny how long it took for it to sink in with the Freidens that the AmigaOne was history. I remember just a few months ago Thomas was re-enacting Custer's last stand with: "Hardware issues? What hardware issues?"

Well Dammy. It is clear that Acube Systems Italy have spotted the existing Macintosh PPC market enough viable to expand our userbase...

Many amigans who doesn't have AmigaONEs could buy el cheapo EBAY or second-store market Macintosh PPC based.

Many former amigans who left our platform and migrate to Macintosh due to the lack of OS in the past years, or due to the lack of AmigaONE hardware since 2002, now they have the chance to run AmigaOS on their macintoshes.

I posted these news on an italian MAC forums and these were widely accepted with interest and by former amigans with enthusiasm!

The most used comment is: «Che figata!» («How Cool!») :-D

There is Yellow Dog Linux from Terrasoft which runs on PPC Macintoshes falwlessly!

And if I remember well they had received in the past direct informations by Apple on how to run it on their machines...
