Weird (ROM?) problem
« on: May 26, 2007, 10:17:08 AM »
Hi,

So my hard drive died.  Annoying since it was hardly used, but these things happen.  However, on installing a new (old) one, a very strange thing is happening.  Nothing above 3.0 will install correctly.  I`ve tried 3.9 using all the tricks in the book, but it simply will not work.  Among the problems was one that seems to be exclusive to A4000 ROMS - "Invalid resident library".  The only thing Google throws up is in reference to A4000s which don`t have workbench.library installed.  I am using an A1200 and do have the library in place.  Other symptoms include managing to get (seemingly) fully installed, but everything I double click crashes.
3.1 refuses to work as well.
So I have decided to stick with a 3.0 + hacks installation instead (this is rock solid so far).  To my knowledge, the only thing I was using which required a higher OS was Genesis (from the 3.9 CD).  I used Miami back in the dial-up days, but getting it running with a LAN card is proving tricky...  Are there any simpler alternatives?

Cheers

What version of Kickstart do you have?
It sometimes comes up if trying to run a new Workbench library or command on an older Kickstart or an old library/program on a new system.
Check the versions of the files (v39 is WB 3.0, v40 is WB 3.1 and v45 is WB3.5 or 3.9).

I`m using real 3.1 ROMs.  It`s almost as if they`ve "reverted" to 3.0 (impossible, I know, just a feeling I had at one stage)

"Invalid resident library" refers to the 3.1 ROMs failing to be patched in memory by the Setpatch

OS 3.9 Setpatch command in the s:startup-sequence loads the "Devs:AmigaOS ROM update" - if it does it correctly, then the resident libraries are available for use by applications.

Thanks, that`s interesting info.  Although it doesn`t help in this case, since I had the identical command / library setup on the new HD as the old one.  I`m sticking with 3.0 for now.
