Hopeful new Amiga user saying hello
« on: May 25, 2007, 06:50:47 AM »
Greetings,

I have personally never used an Amiga before, and have been curious about them for some time now. I was a console kid back when Amigas were new. My main interest is games, and was pointed to the Amiga 1200.

I was specifically pointed to one with a 50 mhz upgrade board, hard drive, and 4megs of fast ram.

Hoping to learn a lot here :)

Welcome!

The A1200 is pretty much the best option if you're just interested in playing games, but it's hugely expandable as well...
A 50MHz board (I presume a 68030 accelerator) will suit you just fine for nearly every game in existence, and a lot of programs that are available. 4 Megs is good, but if you could expand it, you'll be more at ease when running bigger programs. Most accelerators work with standard 72-pins SIMMs, so it shouldn't be a problem adding some more RAM.

Have fun with you first Amiga! It's never too late to start using them :-)

Hi Stressboy. Good thing you found the premier website on the internet for classic Amiga systems. Most any kind of question you have can and will likely be answered, no razzing for even the dumbest sounding questions.

You basic stock Amiga1200 only comes with a Motorolla 68020 processor and 2 megs of ram, which will work fine with quite a number of games, especially older one.

The most common accelerators are the Apollo and Blizzard brand and come mostly in speeds of 68030 and 68040 at various mhz's. There are 68060 accelerators, but they are very expensive, and not worth it just for playing games. Both the Apollo and Blizzard will allow you to also install a SIMM memory chip from 4megs all the way up to 128megs. 32 and 16 megs will give you plenty of memmory.

Harddrives are simple, any 2.5" laptop IDE drive will do. Just, you have to partition it in a special way since Amiga can't handle sizes above 4gig.

Thats the basics. The best source of all the hardware thats been made for Amiga is www.amiga-hardware.com if you want to see what you're buying.

The best program to use with games is WHload which you can get here LINK

And www.aminet.net is the top site for public domain programs.

Have fun!
Amiga 3000D UP and running! Hear that clicking. 8)
Amiga 3000D & 4000D in storage sadly.

Sounds like the perfect Amiga games machine to me.

Just install WHDLoad, and you can install thousands of games right onto your HD that "back in the day" would have to be run from floppy disk.
