CD Player for HDD stored CD Audio files?
« on: May 23, 2007, 06:55:37 PM »
Hi there,
Does anyone know of or can anyone recommend a Amiga "CD Player" that will play CD Audio files that are stored on a HDD or other medium via the phono ports on the back of a A1200?

EDIT: My A1200 currently doesn't have a CD drive installed, but it does have network access to another machiene with stored CD Audio files on it. Hence the question.

Cheers,
Hodgkinson

There are no files on a "basic standard Audio CD". Only audio samples. Some file systems show tracks as files, usually AIFF files. But mostly you have to rip the audio data with a special program (e.g. MakeCD on the Amiga or CDex on Windows).

I don't remember any player which can play raw CDDA files. But there is a program which can add an AIFF header to such files, so that any AIFF player can play them.

Other than that, this one should do, too, if you have AHI installed:

copy filename audio:b/16/c/2/f/44100

I'd recommend to convert the files to mp3. Saves a lot of disk space and offers more players.

Bye,
Thomas

for once I'd say Thomas is partially wrong - you shouldn't use mp3 IMHO.
disk space is sooo cheap nowadays

use FLAC if your CPU is fast enough
(BTW, anybody knows if mp3 or flac is more CPU friendly?)

Ah. I always thought that Audio CD's simply had files stored on them in a similar way to data CD's, but I’ve always wondered if this was really the case since individual audio tracks can actually be seen on the CD surface just by looking at it in the right light.

Just to put the record straight, when I said "stored on another machine" I meant on a PC with a network-shared CD drive and a audio CD shoved in the drive.

Thanks,
Hodgkinson.
