Urgent Help Required - SCSI CD Drive (A1230)

Hi again,

Sorry to say but got yet another problem. The issue is as follows...

I managed to get a 25 to 50 pin SCSI cable and it fits in my CD drive and my SCSI interface slots fine. Although I was told it's just like a floppy drive but it is picking up nothing. What tell-tale signs do I need to look for if it is working properly? A list would be helpful and I will try to reply in as short time possible. Feel free to ask me anything but I'm not a pro Amiga user really (just like them allot :lol: ).

you need handler + dosdrivers.

you can pick and install amicdrom/amicdfs or idefix97 from www.aminet.net to get your CD recognized and mounted.

Even for 3.1 OS? I was told it's pritty much plug 'n' play. If I do need this software how can I get it onto my Amiga? (it's not online). :-?

OS 3.1 direct CD-Rom support is nicely said rudimentary or ancient, just good enough to emergency use.

Precisely. If you want to do such an emergency test, find CD0 in Storage/DOSDrivers, change the device tooltype to 1230scsi.device and the unit to whatever you're using. Then double-click. Ta da. Should be working. Now install a different CD filesystem and use that same device and unit when configuring.

Well the seller supplied me with the following floppys...

"From Aminet 1/2 + 2/2"
"Power CD Disk 1 + 2"
"JUE CD" <-
"Squirrel CD Install"

Bare in mind I haven't tested them yet.

[EDIT] Disks only seem to supply stiff for Squirrel, MPEG, Music and PhotoCD stuff. had a guy on my MSN who tried to help but to no avail. Any help anyone? :-?

As has been already stated, you need to move the CD0 icon from the Storage drawer to the DOS drivers drawer.
But then you need a CD file system (CDFS).
If you're not on line, get some one to send you a floppy. If you can't find one anywhere, I will mail you one.

SCSI chains must be terminated at both ends. Hopefully your SCSI controller (was it a Blizzard?) is terminated at its end. Then you just need to terminate the other end.

Your CD drive has two 50-pin connectors, doesn't it? The cable goes into one, and in the other you stick a SCSI terminator.

Can you test this in a shell window?

What do you see?

No it has just the 1 and 2 phono outputs. Plus it's saying "hdtoolbox: Unknown Command".

motrucker: I have looked and it's in the "DOSDrivers" drawer as standard.

If you've run the Squirrel installer then it might have overwritten the proper driver with its own Squirrel-specific one.

Make sure that the CD0 mountlist in DEVS:Dosdrivers/ points to 1230scsi.device in the CD0.info and doesn't have a "device = " field in the actual mountlist. The icon should also have "UNIT = 6" or whatever the CD unit number is (check the jumpers on the rear of the drive and make sure it is NOT 7). Again, the mountlist shouldn't have a "unit = " field.

spirantho: I havn't run the Squirrel installer as I know it isn't a Squirrel cable. I have typed in "1230scsi.device" and the jumper is on "ID1" physically shown on the back of the CD drive so I think I remember it being "UNIT=1". This was shown on the DOSDrivers folder and on the "CD0" Info. "HDToolbox" could run it brefly but it only founf a SCSI device no mention of CD drives. I did have help from a guy on MSN but that's as far as he can help without being there apparently. Im not home at the moment but i'd be happy to say what exacly it says on the "CD0" Info. Maybe I did something wrong... :-?

If the jumper is on ID1 are you sure that's unit 1? What I mean is most SCSI jumpers start at ID0 through to ID2. How many ID jumpers do you have? If you have 8, ID1 means unit 1. If you have three, and ID1 is the lowest (i.e. you have jumpers labelled ID1, ID2 and ID3), then you have unit 1 as well. If, however, you have ID0, ID1 and ID2 jumpers and ID1 is jumpered then your CD is unit *2* not 1.
