HD Partition Problem ie Not a Dos Disk ?

OK I finally got cross doss to work and managed to downlaod and run lha to extraxt the HDinstTools program. I had 3 Partitions and wanted 2 so i deleted 1 (Not the bootable) and resized the other two. I was left with  a 44Mb HD0: (the bootable partition) and a 200 Mb HD1: Partition. I was informed to reboot for changes to take effect and that all data would be lost. Now i cant access the HD :-( What have i done ? This is turning into a saga of ineptitude  :-(  HELLP

If you resize a partition, you have to format it and copy all the data back; as it says in the requester "All data will be lost".

If you can remember the EXACT start block and length of the old partitions, you can put that data back in and get all your data back, otherwise its format time i'm afraid.

If you boot a workbench disk, you should get icons for the partition saying ":NDOS" or ":?" or such. Highlight one, and select "Format" from the "Icon" menu.

Use these settings; Fast File System, International Mode, *NO* dir cache, *NO* Trashcan.

If you had to use HDInstTools, i'm assuming that you don't have a workbench installer disk, so:

Then copy the contents of your workbench disk to the hard disk. Make a directory called "Fonts" on that partition, and copy the contents of the "Fonts" disk to it. Copy the contents of "Extras" across, as well. Then reboot.

If you are copying the sisks to the HD, use the "Show all files" item in the Icon menu.  This allows you to see *everything* on the disks.  Make sure you copy everything over to HD0: and it'll work.

Let me get this straight.
You got a requestor saying all data would be lost, which you "ok"'ed, then you rebooted so the change would take effect and you're worried about not being able to access the data?

Just go on and format the partitions, then install the system again.

Somehow I don't think you've quite understood what loosing all data means...

either.

1. he belived he hadnt touched Sys (the bootable partition) when editing..so by a mistake it went along with the reboot.
(if you ever saved your rdb settings then u could just load it up and your boot would be ok again)

2. that you have heard so much about pc lately and you belived that amigaos also could resize a partition without loosing data etc.
that wont work, either u remove it totally or let it stay , also as an extra info must be that when u do this on a pc then the disk will be very fragmented and should only be used if you have no other alternatives..

good luck, and i hope you have a rdb file or a floppy disk with os3.9 recovery so that you can boot your system and start installing again.

If you read his other thread in this section - Partitioning 140Mb HD and Installing WB 3.0 - you'll find that he meant to lose all the stuff on the HD and start from scratch.

I think he's just confused because they weren't formatted and he couldn't write to them.

Vincent you are a total star bro. I didn't realise i had to format after resizing the partition. Doh ! Thanks to everybody for all there Help. Its MUCH appreciated. Im now a shiney happy person again  :-) Ive got my two partitions and they are clean of the crap that was on them from before. Next i need to install WB3.0. So i guess i will go and try that now. Does anybody have an installer disk out there for 3.0 that i could get a copy of for the future? When i first got a Amiga it was an A600 with the new WB disks but didnt have a HD so it didnt come with the installer. Just the standard 5 disks. Im getting right into my amiga and i can now pick up stuff for it a lot cheeper for it than 10 years ago so im going to be expanding. What would be a good accelerator for a standard A1200 ? Anyway im of to copy WB into HD0 now so Thankyou all.  :-)

Bah, copying the disks in and figuring out what should be where will teach you more about AmigaOS whan the install disk AND an hour with a manual ;-)

Really, it shouldn't be too difficult.

Fonts: goes to SYS:Fonts/
Storage: goes to SYS:Storage/

Uhm, memory block. Moving right along, just insert the Storage and Fonts floppies in the drive and drag them to somewhere in the root of your hd0 partition. WB3.0 should support automatic directory creation on volume dragging, I think...
