why use hardfiles when you can just use a directory?

Because using directories has a lot of bugs which can be avoided by using hardfiles.

I was able to copy the emergency boot drawer of my AmigaOS 3.9 disk to Linux and boot from that, and using a hardfile in AmigaOS 4.0 would be pointless.  What system are you running EUAE on?

@ChaosLord

It's mainly on WinUAE that you run into problems using directories.  EUAE doesn't run on Windows hence many problems are solved.  :-D

@SamuraiCrow

Are you saying that Linux FS does not destroy the hpasrwed flags of all files?

Are you saying that Linux fs does not mangle any fancy European chars?

@ChaosLord

I'm saying that I was able to install AmigaOS 3.9 in Linux directories and the locale files looked like the right fancy European characters.  I'm not sure which ISO standard the Linux file system uses for the characters but I know that Linux has more flags than AmigaOS users usually pay attention to but, now that you mention it, most of them are geared toward multiuser environments and not single-user workstation environments like Amiga...

You're probably right.  I just ran into fewer problems using a directory than using a hardfile under Linux.
