« on: June 18, 2003, 10:28:08 AM »
Just a quick question...

When i get my a1 (note the word "when" in the phrase), can i connect my escom a1200 up to it in order for the a1 to access the custom chips? Or maybe try to get an a4000, i dunoooooo what to do right now.

No. There was talk about a northbridge or something similar that would use the A1200's chips when certain programs started to bang hardware, but now it seems that the project has been abandoned. (to my dismay, I was really looking forward for that function. It would create _the_ ultimate Amiga.)

Can't one create a "simple" PCI-card with an A1200 trapdoor connector that simply map 8MB of PCI-space to the A1200 motherboard? Then one could use the MMU to remap all classic Amiga hardware registers to whatever the PCI-card was assigned.

Just a thought...

Sureley it would make sence to do something like this, there is all the questions about wether the a1 is going to run classic miggy programs, then this would surley make the goal more achieveable?

I hope :-)

It's going to run classic software through emulation. I'm intending to use my Catweasel MK3 with the A1 to be able to read Amiga disks and to plug in the old joysticks and stuff. :)

Cool.. rather have hardware than software tho, just seemed like a good idea thats all. Has anyone in the UK actually got their mits on an a1 yet? Would like to see one in action before i buy it (yes - i am a tightass!) Also off topic, but anyone in wales fancy organsing a monthly / bimonthly amiga user meetup or something? Its time to get the a-community back on the road!

The whole idea was more trouble than it's worth. If a program really required a physical amiga chipset that UAE can't provide, then the fact the A1200 is plugged into a 600MHz+ PPC machine with 512MiB RAM via a PCI bus, with all of AmigaOS4's bells and whistles.... that same program probably still wont work :-)

If you want to use your old hardware, get a PCI catweasel.

You could purchase one of those A1200-on-a-card which fits in 5 1/4 bay, inside the tower where you put your A1/Peg.
I can not remember the name of the product but it was on the news and sold by italian reseller http://www.soft3.net/
