Super Buster and A3000: is it normal?
« on: May 06, 2007, 11:49:37 PM »
Hello!

Recently I've updated every chips inside my A3000.
Now I have also the Super Buster 11. I've noticed that, if I run the computer with a accelerator card (in my case a PowerChanger 040) everything works as it should but if I run the A3000 with its original CPU (68030/16), after setting all jumpers for this configuration, zorro cards are not recognized. It happens only with Super Buster 11. Using my old Super Buster 7 cards are 100% working.

Is it normal? Is Super Buster 11 compatible with the original A3000's 030/16? Otherwise, could my Super Buster 11 be defective or what could be the cause?

Thanks in advance!
Alex

This certainly is an unusual problem. Are you sure the jumpers are correct? As a 16mhz clock vs 25mhz clock would yield these type of problems.

you shoud try to run accelcard in async mode it its possible
i had similar problem with my g-force 040, and it needs one command before setpatch, iirc its "gvpcpuctrl async"
too lazy to use shift key properly...

That is normal.  The Buster r. 11 doesn't like being run at 16 MHz.  In a  1997 usenet message, Dave Haynie explained it this way:

Quote

There have been reports of trouble with Rev 11 Buster in 16MHz A3000s.
This was supposedly tested and approved by PA at Commodore. But by
then, we weren't making 16MHz systems anymore, so there wasn't much
testing or simulation done in Engineering, if any, for the later
Buster revision.

It works when your PowerChanger 040 is installed because the Buster is then getting its clock signal from the accelerator card.  It probably supplies a 25 MHz signal.

I think it is the cause and that Super Buster 11 does not work properly with 16mhz. Newt week I'll get a Cyberstorm 060 and I'll test again with the new card and... I hope it will work  ;-)

the MK2 works in INT CLOCK mode while the PowerChanger040 works in EXT CLOCK mode.

Accidenti, sei sicuro?

Sorry guys... Italian is faster, after I'll translate to English, too ;)

Comunque meglio continuare in inglese altrimenti qui ci .... :-)

I hope so. That would make for 50 pizzas and we could all have some here at amiga.org  :-)
