burning cd32 iso's
« on: April 26, 2007, 10:39:41 AM »
hi i am new to the world of cd32. I have just got one I have many originals. I have some collections on iso I am burning and wanna play them. I am using wikipedia instructions. I am writing at x16. The cds are not being read as fast as the originals. This means massive loading time and the cd sounds really horrible when spinning. I am using DATASAFE BLANK DISC CD-R 52X will a change in cd help or will it be the way i am burning. One back up that did work really loaded instantly and sounded nice. I dunno what my problem is any help would be ace. Thanks

16x is quite fast actually. Try burning slower and use a different brand of CD-R. In addition, some drives aren't good at reading CD-Rs at all (I don't know if the CD32 should be, though).

I've always found that if the cd constantly speeds up then slows down again coupled with the sound like the disc is trying to burst out of the top of the drive, then a simple adjustment to the burning speed of the cd is all that is required.

When in doubt burn cd's at 2x or 4x maximum  :-)

The CD32 drive is a 2x drive so I would imagine 2x burning would produce the best results...

Hi thanks for advice guys. I was getting the horrible noise. Just gotta wait for more cds to arrive. I was wondering which program you can write 2x because the lowest on Nero (which I am using) is 4x. Which cds should I get what do you guys recomend any good cheap ones?

Easy_burning worked well for my needs under Win98. I preferred it to Nero, but I didn't need any "advanced" features.

Edit: Also, for disks, I use Datawrite 1x-52x 700MB CD-R. This was on recommendation from my local PC shop, their engineers used them and said they had had no problems. I have so far only produced 2 coasters (out of approx. 50 written), both of which were early on, and I can't prove that it was the disks rather than me {bleep}ing up that was the cause, so they seem ok.

The problem is that those old drives aren't good at reading... Try to burn as slow as you can. Probably use Verbatim for burning...they are expensive but good.

Hi, for what it's worth, I burn discs for all my older CD-based systems at 8X or slower, have had no problems. I use TDK disks. Also, maybe my CD32 is wierd, but I have little luck getting to play CD-r's, only plays CD-R's for music....Odd

Firstly hello all, am new here :) had an amiga during the early 90's and decided the othe day to get her out again and see what happens.

I've been playin through some of my old CD32 games but also have got my hands on a few of the iso out there.  As is mentioned above in the thread I too am having serious trouble buring anything and getting it to work.  It appears that games of a few mb in size work fine but anything bigger always fails.

I've used Nero, Alcohol 120% and ImgBurn with exactly the same results in each.  The majority of games just sit on the amiga cd32 screen and finally after 10minutes dump out into a workbench with some random error.

Could my problem be that my old machine is on its way out? Or is it just that she was built before the days of CD-R's and the drive don't like them with to much info on.

Any advice would be great.  I can always just use WINUAE but would rather be using the real deal.

P.S. Sorry for the long post.

First I would make sure that you are using cdr and not cdrw.  Second dont burn more than 4X if you can and definately no more than 8x.  Try using ISO Burn to make the cd's.  I have Beneath a Steel Sky on a generic CDR and it runs great, but using high quality discs might be better.  Good Luck

@Thread
So, the speed that you use to write a cd affects its reading speed?? For example, if someone is restricted to write cd's at x4 due to slow IDE interface, these cd's can not be read at higher speeds on another computer?

On most occasions yes.

No, writing speed affects reading speed because the writing Laser has (if you burn at 4x instead of 16x) 4 times more time to mark a bit as set (marking it more clearly) thus it is easier to read. -> Write a note up in a hurry and give it to someone to read. Write another note of similar length but take time writing it down, and give it the same person to read. Guess which note will he have "deciphered" faster.

Just out of interest is it possible to 'swap' the drive for a more modern drive so that the cd32 is capable of reading better.

Oh and I'm still not having any luck.  Have tried more ISO burning tools am burning at 4x using Verbatim CD-R's.
