With 3.9 BB2 installation you have to use the latest CGX4 update, without it you lose your CGX screenmodes.

I have no clue what is BB2. The CGX 4 CD came with a floppy that said: Update disk - Run this disk first.

I ran the installation from this floppy and not from the CD. Since I bought the package only a month ago, I have no reason to believe it does not contain the latest update.

A little investigation reveals that the software (or hardware) of the CV3D may be incompatible with my Mercury accelerator. If I boot in 68030, I get no error message but the CV3D modes are unavailable. Booting in 68040 give the aforementioned error message.

Still, it feels like the CV3D is totally dead.

I was fearing this exact problem would occur. With OS3.9 you need CGX V4 to up to date or you will lose all CGX screenmodes. It a stupid bug. Look above for the download location.

When you recieve Amiga software on a disk or CD never assume it's the latest version! To keep producing newer versions of software releases on a hard medium costs money the Amiga community usually doesn't have. Always look around for a more uptodate version of your software.

BBs (or Boing Bags written  fully) are updates to OS3.9. You can get them here: http://os.amigaworld.de/index.php?lang=en&page=12

@Flashlab

You seem quite confident on this so I suppose these are symptoms you've seen in the past.

Having been through the process already, I can purge my HD and reinstall WB 3.1 on it.

I also still have my Emergency disk for OS 3.9.

Is there a logical series of steps I should follow from here? What should I install (or not) and in what order?

Also, thanks for the explanation and the links for BB1 and BB2.

Ok everyone, its official, two additional components in my A3000 are at war with each other.

What makes my CV64/3D drivers crash is... the init040 of my Mercury accelerator!!! And without it, I get no copyback mode. I don't know how much this degrades my processing speed but that's what my investigations leads me to.

Maybe the patches will fix this but I doubt it.

Still... we shall see...
