Help installing OS3.9 part II !
« on: April 25, 2007, 08:13:12 PM »
Hi there,
I am having very similar problems as I have seen in a previous post.

I just received my 3.1 ROMs and OS 3.9 CD.

What I have is an Amig 3000 with 68040 and 32 MB fastRAM and 2 MB chipRAM with 1GB almost empty hard drive.

I do have a nice Plextor 12X SCSI CD-ROM reader in an external box I used on an old PC I can sacrifice for this.

However, what I have right now in the 3000 is OS2.1 and it does not have any driver software to read CDs.

Somehow, I expected this new operating system to come with a floppy disk I could boot from that has the needed CD-ROM driver on it, just like good old Windows NT/2000 did.

Now, the driver for the CD-ROM drive is on the CD... not going very far with this...  :-?

Like good old Scott Adams games used to say... what shall I do now? All help is highly welcome.

Thanks

Maybe idefix (found on Aminet) works with WB2.1...was just about to check but the search function on Aminet is dead now :P

Check your Storage/dosdrivers if you have a CD0 icon there...can't remember if WB2.1 had a cd filesystem since it's a cut down version of WB3.0

No CD0 icon in my storage folder...

However... that might be the solution... I have a SCSI controller on my PC and I can easily take my A3000 SCSI HD to the PC and boot from it under winUAE. I can also access the CD from winUAE.

What to do from there, however simple it may seem, is not something I know.

I also have another spare 1GB SCSI drive onto which I could copy the content of the CD and do the whole thing from the 3000.

There is no built in CD support in 2.1.

You should be able to mount the harddrive in WinUAE and install 3.9 in the emulator. You should read some guides about this before if you have never done it before.

Install 3.1 on your HD from WinUAE (I used WB adf files). Copy a CD filesystem to the HD you downloaded on your PC. Make sure it's unpacked when you copy it to HD or have a unlha tool installed on your HD.

Put the HD in your 3000. Should work as you have installed the 3.1 Roms. Boot and install the CD filesystem. If all goes right you have a system that can read your CD-ROM drive then.

Use the OS3.9 installer to make an Emergency Disk. If the installer crashes or doesn't work make sure you have the latest installer in the C drawer on your HD. You can get it from Aminet but copying the one from the WB Install 3.1 disk worked for me.

Boot from the Emergency Disk and install OS3.9. I formatted my HD partitions after I booted from the Emergency disk to ensure a fresh install.

Wow, I may be a complete idiot but... I have no clue how to make an emergency disk and there is no installer in the C drawer in my HD because... there is no C drawer in the HD yet. I just formatted it because I tought it would be better to start from a clean new system.

Isn't there on the CD a generic emergency disk I can boot from?

That's why I said install WB3.1 first in WinUAE on you SCSI HD. That way you'll have a system that can boot on your 3000 with which you can make an Emergency disk using the OS3.9 CD.

So you don't have to make a C drawer yourself. The 3.1 install will do that for you. Just boot WinUAE using the WB3.1 Install adf.

Emergency disks are made by the installer in such a way that they that they match your system. Most of the time this is just a copy of your CD filesystem with matching CD0 mountfile but I have some P96 settings too.

Anyway how would you get your Amiga to boot from a floppy you don't have? I mean you have to get the floppy to boot from it. And there's no adf Emergency disk file on the OS3.9 cd as far as I know... Just try to do it like I told you. Worked for me and really isn't too hard.

@Flashlab

I don't see anything on the CD that would allow me to install WB3.1 so this is a dead end...

That CD HAD to come with a floppy otherwise, my understand is it's totally useless.

I mean, even from an emulator which can read the CD without any special driver, it is still impossible to get anything working from there.

Even if I boot my old WB2.1 from winUAE, the installer still complains about missing libraries.

Okay, I got a friend with an A4000T. Loaded up the CD in his machine to try and make the Emergency disk.

Sure enough, we have an emergency disk and... it only works well with his machine... :madashell:

That's what I'm trying to tell you; Emergency disks are made specifically for the system you make them on.

Anyway you could try to alter the Emergency disk made on the 4000T to work with your setup. Edit the CD0 mountfile and look for the entries there. Make sure the device name and unit number match your setup. I don't know what the device name of the SCSI on the 3000 motherboard is called but probably scsi.device.

And no the CD isn't worthless; you can install OS3.9 with it. But is does take some effort.

Yep, it's called "scsi.device" on the A3000

Just edit it correctly so that it has the unit number correct also whhich is the SCSI ID number you have on the cd-rom

Edit the CD0 with an Amiga text editor...

I don't think the Emergency Disk will work even if you change the EMERGENCY_CD mountlist on it to the correct device/unit. This is because the floppy contains a copy of the AmigaOS ROM Update. Surely this is specific to the model of machine? So if you make the disk on an A4000, it will have the A4000's ROM Update, which probably wouldn't work too well on an A3000. A much better way of doing this is the following:

1. Install 3.1 to HDD from your Workbench floppies (or from UAE as suggested)
2. Configure the CD0 mountlist in 3.1 to correctly mount your CD drive
3. Insert the OS3.9 CD
4. Run the installer and choose the option to create an Emergency Disk
5. Boot from the Emergency Disk with the CD still in the drive

Simple :-)

In all cases, I have to install WB3.1 which I cannot do because I don't have it.

I ordered the ROMs 3.1 and the CD of OS3.9 but I don't have the floppies for WB3.1.

Having access to the CD seems to be insufficient because the installer seems to require specific librairies and stuff in order to run.

Now, that being said, I had the Classic WB backed up somewhere and it required Kickstart 3.1. I think it required the wb3.1 system disk which I may have somewhere.

Somewhere being in my old archives.

So you now can boot your AMIGA and see the CD? Maybe try to copy the installer from the CD to the boot medium. Installer should be in c: ...

Edit - Just found this.

For setting up OS3.9 maybe this helps?

Now this is truly aggravating...  :madashell:

I just managed to get the floppies for WB3.1 and installed it in my main Amiga HD.

Just in case of trouble I also copied the content of the OS3.9 CD (except the videos) on an old Quantum 210MB HD which is formatted in FFS using WinUAE 1.4.1. (BTW, prior to installing WB3.1, I formatted the drive using OS2.1 so this is NOT a SCSI problem)

I made sure in WB3.1 that device CD0: is in devs and not in storage.

Does it see any CD on the 3000? OF COUSE NOT... if I have the CDROM drive connected to the SCSI bus, the device CD0: vanishes!!! If I disconnect the CDROM drive, that device comes right back!! (I can see available devices in diskmaster 2)

Does it even see the 210MB HD? OF COUSE NOT... I can't see my formatted partion on the workbench but the HD is present in HDToolbox which, when I start it, tells me I can't create a partition in FFS because a file is missing in the L: directory...

Now, should I have to assume that it is normal for random files to be missing after installing WB3.1? OF COURSE I SHOULD... how stupid of me to think otherwise...
