Are we going to get 20 questions ever again with Amiga.com?
« on: April 20, 2007, 04:23:34 PM »
Boy that website update really stirs up a hornets nest of questions.. I'd love to know more...

My Questions would be:

1) The site seems focused around Windows Mobile Development, is there any planned development for AmigaOS..

2) When reviewing the amigaDevIndia site it's obvious that they state that they are an outsourcing firm. Some people here have assumed they would be doing AmigaOS development or applications for OS4. The reality is the outsourcing firm seems to only be interested in Windows "work" there is no mention of engineering solutions for business using AmigaOS. Businesses like custom solutions, it amazes me that they aren't at least doing AmigaOS applications development to provide custom solutions instead of going the Windows route?

3) How does the company which is based in the USA feel about outsourcing of IT work in the USA to other places outside the USA while there are tons of USA IT workers that are still layed off and can't find jobs?

4) AmigaOS gets very little mention on the site and there is little mentioned without a log-in. Should we assume support for Classic Machines and AmigaOne computers has ceased and only supported by Hyperion/Amiga Partners.

5) Who exactly did your new website and who is your public relations contact these days?

6) What technology will you be adding to the Kent Stadium Arena? Is it Windows Mobile? I see video cameras and boing balls only.

7) What exactly does your media layer do for Windows Mobile that the directx.dll from Microsoft not do already?

I wouldn't hold my breath, but if I were to take a wild guess, I would say that AmigaOS as we know it has been long dead for a while, complicated by the choice of Hyperion to do it.

Again, speculation on my part.  I have no idea.  I'm just going on the same things you are.  There is no interest in AmigaOS that we can see, and it should have been long-since understood that "Amiga" is now just used as a brand for Windows and portable software.

Then again, I'm extraordinarily grumpy with the whole situation right now, so take my response with a grain of salt.

I'd say yes..but it will be the same kind of answers as usual.  There's really no point in asking them questions because they dont give you a straight answer.

I think it's pretty obvious that they don't give a rat's *ss about classic/new generation users at all ... no meaning in asking them question they will avoid/lie to.

One simple question from me.

What ransom do you want to release the hostage Amiga OS?

Other than that, I'm through. I think I have all the answers I need about AmiInc.

I don't think it's up to Amiga Inc as long as there is a legal issue as to who actually owns it and Hyperion has disappeared.  Besides, you have no hardware to run it on.

There is zero chance of them releasing it open source.

Indeed the Amiga OS situation is kind of hidden on Amiga.com. What seems to be covered better now is the history of the Amiga, unfortunately a sneak-peek in the future isn't present, nor can I remember seeing a link to Hyperion's OS4 site. Even more frustrating is the fact that Hyperion is not among the partners-list.

On AmigaWorld there was a mentioning of the new office adress of Amiga Inc. This got me to, once again, do a 'whois'  on Amiga.com. Then I see the name of Vince Pfeifer as a VP (Vice President?) of Amiga. As copy and paste is easy, the name was pasted in Google before I knew it which presented me with a piece of written text from the Stone-age. It contains a section where Vince is introducing him self. Now, his reasons to join Amiga are a bit strange in my eyes:
Quote

Source: the above linked text, a.d. 2000 so really old non-news[i/]
Why I joined Amiga, by Vincent P. Pfeifer

Other than the belief that Bill McEwen could sell ice cubes to Eskimos, I joined Amiga to take on the challenge of turning a company's name and image that has become somewhat dated here in the United States into a top level, respected company in the computer industry.  As I am coming off a successful venture in helping turn GraphOn into a publicly traded company with record revenues from the position of Vice President of Product Development, I was ready for a new set of responsibilities in more areas than Product Management and Engineering.

Amiga offers a challenge that I look forward to: build a company from the bottom up with the benefit of having name recognition and some technology already in place.

It is an opportunity to do something that I have wanted to do since my early days at 5th Generation when I sat on the Tech Support phones and listened to average users try to use relatively complicated software. I know that it sounds like a religious crusade, but I want to make computers easier for the masses, and with my position at Amiga, I have an opportunity to help influence that vision significantly.

Now, encouraging   not. Or am I just a little too negative?

So, maybe the next 20 questions should be at the adress of Vincent.
Get a SAM, while you can! The new AMIGA is here!

Interestingly, I just got an e-mail from Bill suggesting that he's "ready to do another 20 questions any time we are".

So, if there is interest, let me know and we'll fire away.

Wayne: Give him a shot! At the moment we have nothing, the worse that can happen is... that we end-up with nothing.

I'm frankly amazed he'd even consider it at the moment -  unless Bill's that naive, he must know what questions would come up and evidently thinks he'd be able to field them in such a way that not only puts them in a positive light but still seems credible after what's gone before.  Seeing as he is willing, I'd say go for it!  The current situation seems so surreal that any information might help figure out what's actually been going on.

It wasn't too long ago the last QA session. I say go for it, it is certainly relevant discussion here. And I'll submit a question for consideration:

Do you find the Amiga enthusiast community important to your business, if so, please describe how.

Do we get to fire live ammo at McBill? That would be too cool.

They had to farm OS4 out to Hyperion. So I don't think they have the experties to develop an OS.

No they don't. They like cheap solutions. They don't care whether it's custom or not. If there's an existing product which does what they want at a price they like, they're not going to pay extra for a "custom" solution. Also, how compatible is an AmigaOS business going to be with a Windows OS? How will they share documents or hardware?

See above. There are already some excellent solutions available for businesses on the Windows platform.

They probably feel very happy about it, because the labour outside the US is cheaper.

I think that's a safe assumption.....

That is an interesting question actually :-)

Ok:
- When will Amiga OS4 and new hardware to run it on be available?
- What hardware will be available for Amiga OS4?
