How to edit hard disk icons?
« on: April 16, 2007, 08:38:10 PM »
Hi folks,

I have a 4000 running OS 3.0 and MagicWB I have a 4G hard dive partitioned into 4 :- FDH0-FDH3. After installing this setup I had 4 hard drive icons all looking exactly the same. Recently I copied some files from a 1200 using a floppy disk onto FDH2 (prior to this FDH2 was empty)at which point for some reason the icon for FDH2 changed from a hard drive icon to a floppy drive icon? I tried to get the icon to change back by copy the files to another location and deleting the files on FDH2 but nothing changed as far as icon for FDH2 So I thought I would change it back ...but how do I do that since I cant seem to find any documentation about how the OS allocates hard drive icons. Am I just getting a bit too old for this game or what?

any thoughts Ian.

I think the disk icon is in a file called ".info" in the root directory.  No characters before the .info extension, that is.

The disk icon is called "disk.info", which sits in the root of each partition.

If there is no file called "disk.info", the system uses the default disk icon.

Just copy the icon that you want to the root of the partition and rename it to "disk.info"

Nope, it's called disk.info.

I thought it was Disk.info, and you only see it if it is actually in the root of the physical device. Use IconEdit and see what is there.

Hi Folks,
thanks for all your feedback, yes it appears that "disk.info" is the offending file or rather a lack of - copied said file across from FDH0 and all seems well now.
Not sure why or where it all went in the first place but I guess thats life with an Amiga!

thanks agin, Ian

How did you copy the files from the floppy? If you copied then from the shell with something like "copy df0:#? ... " then it would have copied disk.info as well, overwriting the existing icon.

@dvvrue95

Just to add that you could also have a bit of fun with your Workbench and fix things like this with 'Icon Copy' available from Aminet :-)

You just drag and drop an icon into the left window and then drop one you want changed into the right window. It works for changing drawers as well as the 'Disk.info' of partitions  8-)

Note: there is a later version than Icon Copy 1.0 for OS3.5 and OS3.9.

OS3.5 and above also have quick icon replacement built into the Information window (RAmiga+I).

Is there a way to EASILY change lots of icons?  I want something where I can select a bunch of drives or say a bunch of folders and then select a new icon and have the tool apply the new icon to those only....  Anything like that out there?

Changing MagicWB for NewIcons. There is built in "update drawers" and "CopyNewIcon".

And Ni looks much better than MWB. :-D

Seconded. Also, find MrIcon - it will let you easily create, copy, and delete either the normal or the NewIcon images for indidual files.

Thanks will take a look again at that.. I had looked at it but I don't remember seeing the icons part.

BTW, perhaps you know... MWBench needs to be registered to use correct?  If I install it, can it still be registered (unlike Opus Magellan I am finding out or IDEFix)?

*EDIT:  Mis-read what you wrote..  So I should go for NewIcons instead... I will take a look-see then.  Does it need to be registered?

... one of the reasons ALL the software I have written is time coded by version.. after so many years it turns off any protection, nag screens or whatever permanently so people still using it can do so and others who may in the future need not worry about it.

NewIcons did not need to be registered as I recall. Pull it down from somewhere and read the docs.

Try here.

Thanks.. got it...    Now does anyone know how to easily uninstall MagicWB since there seems to be no way to register it anymore..    Wish now I had not installed it but I thought it might be nice to use..  live and learn.
