Dedicated Amithlon system
« on: April 10, 2007, 09:11:06 AM »
Hi everyone!

After finally getting bored of Windows 2000, I decided to swap fast 500MHz Pentium III system for a 50MHz 030 A1200. It is certainly very nice, but lack of colours, screen space and in some cases speed is a bit annoying.

Last year I installed Amithlon on an HD and it was great to use.

What I thought I might do now is get a system to dedicate to Amithlon. Maybe something like a 1GHz Pentium III. I could then use this instead of the A1200 and instead of the Windows PC. I would get a PPC Amiga, or a better 68k system, but unfortunately I lack the £££ required to do that.

Does anyone else here have a system dedicated to Amithlon? If so, what are it's specs?

Is there any hardware that anyone would recomend for Amithlon? I found that it worked quite well on my PIII systemm with an NVidia TNT2 graphicsa card, but I didn;t really test it that much.

Cheers
Steve

Nforce 2-4 chipset with integrated audio and LAN, Geforce FX (5200 to 5950) are working very well with Gary's latest kernel.

There is a recent thread here in which the kernals author outlined the specific hardware that he targeted.  This makes a laptop Amiga possible if you can find one with the correct specs (the design is 2 years old now).

I've been using Amithlon for over a year now and it is great. My sysem is a PIII-1000 with 384 MB RAM and 24 GB of Hard Drive Space (1-15 GB IDE and 1-9 GB SCSI). It has a 3COM (3C905C-TX) NIC and a SoundBlaster 128 sound card. It has a 32 MB NVidia TNT2 video card and can do resolutions up to 1280x1024 at 16.7 million colors. I even have a working CD-Writer on it (using MakeCD software).

I have it hooked up to my home network running at 100Mb/Full. I use AWeb 3.5.08 for browsing.

I have gotton AHI working on my sound card and can play both MOD's (HippoPlayer) and MP3's (AMPlifier).

I have it on my Windows network so it can access my file server and use my network printer.(with SAMBA).

An old PIII-1000 should be plentiful and cheap (even free). And 5/6 year old hardware should be supported by the available kernals.
A1000 - 2 Floppies, 2 MB RAM, OS 1.0-1.3
A500 - 170 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, OS 1.3/2.04
A2000 - 350 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, A2630, OS 2.04
A2500 - 540 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, A2630, OS 3.9
A1200 - 20 GB HD, 64 MB RAM, Blizzard IV
Amithlon - 49 GB HD, 768 MB RAM, PIII-1G
AROS - 80 GB HD, 2 GB RAM, P4-3.2GHz

Hi all, never posted here before, but I've visit regularly.

Finally blew away XP and reinstalled Amithlon.  I'm trying Gary's 3.10 Kernel, but I have a couple of problems...

Kernel 3.10
NF3 250GB motherboard
160 GB Dedicated HD (3.1 GB Sys, 100 GB Work, 44 GB Play)
GeForce 6200 - I may switch back to Radeon 7200
AfA for smooth fonts

I'm booting from a partition on SATA drive (I'll eventually install some Linux when I find one I like)

I'm using SFS2 2.3 - but copying files >150MB from CD causes Guru - should I go to SFS 1.270? or is there something I can do to stabilize?

Or, is there a good faq or group I should browse maybe?

Cheers

I've been using a 2nd-hand PC for Amithlon for a bit over a year now.  It's an IBM NetVista (I don't recall the model #), with PIII 933MHz, 256MB RAM, 30GB HD, SoundBlaster 128, and a Matrox graphics card (Millennium?).

It was cheap and the performance is really good with AmigaOS 3.9!

I have recently put a DVD-RW drive in it, and it works using MakeCD!  I haven't tried over 4GB (I expect that to be a problem) but I have written >3GB discs.  The MakeCD GUI doesn't like the extra digits in the numbers but otherwise seems to work OK with DVD-R media (haven't tried others yet).  Disks don't get finalised sometimes, that's the only trouble.  I have to reboot and try finalising again until it works.

Amithlon doesn't like the graphics or sound chips that are on the motherboard, but that doesn't really matter.  It also didn't like the NIC that was in the machine - the SoundBlaster wouldn't work with the NIC plugged in.  I don't have a use for a NIC at the moment so that's not a problem.

This machine will boot from the original Amithlon CD if I have troubles, and I like that.  I'd like to upgrade my hardware, but I'll need to figure out how to make a bootable Amithlon CD with Gary's kernel.

Oh... I installed Amithlon on the HD using a FreeDOS floppy image that someone had put on Aminet.  That worked really well for me.  No trouble at all.
