What exactly do you have there?  HomePNA bridges, or something else?

UTP (unshielded twisted pair) is a network protocol. I know Sun used it for a long time, don't know if other platforms used it. These adaptors make it possible to use Ethernet instead. One is a CentreCom and the other seems unbranded, although much more solid (all metal casing).

Err... UTP / unshielded twisted pair is a cabling standard - not a network protocol.

Most common home/small business Ethernet cabling is UTP.

And 'Ethernet' is a whole load of different cabling standards (10Base5, 10Base2, 10BaseT, 100BaseTx, 1000BaseTx, 10BaseS, 100BaseFx, ...) - I assume you mean Thickwire (10Base5) or Cheapernet (10Base2)?

Dammit! You're totally right. I should've researched this myself. I picked up a crapload of Sun stuff a while ago and since I know nothing about Suns I asked a friend that has used these computers a lot in the past to ID the various pieces for me last week. I'm starting to pile up too much stuff here and want to sell what can be sold and throw the rest in the trashbin.

Ok.. after a little research.. they are "micro transceivers". You can check'em out here:

I think I'm gonna go and re-look all the Sun stuff myself with serial numbers and all.. Obviously my friend has been hitting the bong a little too hard.

Sorry about the confusion.

Bleh scrap the token ring crap. Man I remember when people used to say how much better ring topology networks were setup, and how Token Ring was superior to Ethernet at the time. It's all IBM big blue crap I tell you.

BTW, tell your friend to get out of his "token ring" if he is all confused, if you know what I mean.  :-D
