Infuriating time-out!
« on: March 29, 2007, 02:19:00 AM »
This happens to me all the time!  I write a lengthy reply and hit "Submit", and I'm no longer logged-on.  I HATE wasting my time like this!

No, my ISP is NOT terminating the connection as I'm still on-line now.  It's possible, I suppose, that it causes this somehow, but it only happens on this site.  Wayne, is there a time limit for in-activity and can it be lengthened?  I am not a fast typer.

Sorry for the anger, I'm cooling off now.

Maybe there is something I can change in IBrowse?

10,080 minutes isn't long enough for you?  That's the default session length (in minutes).  That being said, it's possible that you logged in initially 167 hours ago and just happen to have met that limit while tinkering around.  Raising it however only complicates things and wouldn't resolve anything.

Short of that, my only advice is to log out every time, then log in when you return.

Wouldn't he had to have had a window open to AO that whole time? I've never had a time out and I never have to type in my password.

I have had this problem as well. Can't blame amiga.org though, this is common to all sites in general. If you are writing anything that takes time or effort, make sure to save a copy at least to the clipboard before hitting submit.

Exactly, koaftder (or Piru ?) is right. I always copy the text to the clipboard if writing took me several minutes.

This is a problem I've had more than once and it is unique to this site.  Of course copying to the clipboard is a workaround, but its so easy to forget every once in a while.  And yes, it is highly infuriating.  Its like getting robbed or something..  you put time and effort into writing something original and then, *poof*, its gone forever.  It really shouldn't be incumbent upon users to remember to do this little chore every signle time, imo.  Shouldn't "modern" software be at least a little bit fault-tolerant in this way?

Sounds like a browser issue to me. Have you tried using your non-Mig computer to browse over the same connection with Firefox or IE?

Or perhaps you have some paranoid cookie settings switched in iBrowse.

It happened to me just yesterday..  I wonder if its a local browser setting that causes it?

For the record I use Safari and, occasionally IE6 if I'm surfing from work. I very occasionally use iBrowse 2.4 on my A4000. I have never had this problem with any of those browsers.

It's not necessary to copy text to clipboard every time :) Just hit back button if that happens and copy it then, log in again and paste :) Works at least in IBrowse.

@Tenacious

Hitting the BACk button on the Browser Will NOT always work.  This has happened to me various times.....how horrible!

Here is what I do no to take care of it..............when I am typing a lengthy reply............just COPY and PASTE your text to a WordPad or Final Writer or something..before hitting SEND.

I do it as Habit now.............because you wont remember everything you typed.  Tottally SUCKS!
CD32 is actually the best Amiga ever made by Commodore!...

I mean, I could always reboot the site (Amiga.org like what? 14.0?) and start over with the latest (non-Amiga friendly but actually compliant) Xoops software..  :)

Somehow I think that might not be such a great idea... :)
