ppc does not help. even 603p@240 is too slow.

If somehow you had a DEDICATED HARDWARE DECODER
on the A1200 then sure it would work. but with the limited color system. it would look like crap.

Software decoders need a minimum of 300mhz to play back smoothly.

But reading data DVDs should work fine. I think that is what the original post was referring to?

I cant play DVD movies on my 1200 but I use my DVD Rom to make use of data.
So if I use Nero to put a load of Amiga files onto a DVD disc then I can see them and make use of them on my 1200 no problem. (Amiga folder on my PC from Aminet)
At least DVD can be good for that side of it.
But as they rightly say DVD movies No not a chance unless you got a powerfull Amiga ssytem.

And sadly that is something I have not got, so I will settle for my Apollo 030/40 for now.
Of course I use Aminet on my 1200 using AWeb, but letts face it my PC can download a ton and a half while my Amiga is stiil downloading a quarter of that.
Mike.
Amiga 1200, 82gb HD, 4 way IDE\'97, DVD Multi-Recorder, OS3.9, BB1,BB2, Apollo Turbo MkII 030/40, 32meg Fastram, 4Gb CF card PCMCIA slot, IDE CF card adaptor 4Gb CF card, HP 810C, Alba HDTV, Converted PC PSU. C128, C64, C16, Plus4, 1701, 1570, 1541MkII, ARP6.0,KCS Power Cart, FreezeFrame MK3B, Freeze Machine, Simons Basic,  PSP, PS1, PS2, PS3 HDMI and 1TB HD+ 80gb USB HD, PS3 TV add on, Sound Surround speakers for PS2,PS3,PC, and Amiga Amazing so

So are there any possibilities for DVD-playback with Amithlon or WinUAE?

Should be no problem, assuming you have software that can do it (say: mplayer compiled for 68k). Naturally you must use JIT and pretty powerful PC.

Then again, why not just use WinDVD or PowerDVD, you get nice surround sound and hw acceleration...

Bah, that would be too easy, i.e. no fun anymore. :-P
Btw, is there a 68k compile of MPlayer anywhere?

So what was the deal with amidog's amp2 which appears to have been written to play DVD's? see aminet or amidog's site
http://www.amidog.se/amiga/  wip.

There is just not enough cpu power in even the fastest powerpc accelerator currently available. It might be possible if the shark is ever released or if someone write drivers for a hardware mpeg2 decoder.
