Well, that depends on whether you want to get back the Amiga Platform, or if you want an Amiga-like nextgen OS like OS4.

If you want an Amiga, you can generally find them in a local thrift store or flea market for less than you would pay on Ebay, although they are very common on Ebay. If emulation isn't a problem for you, then WinUAE may be an answer.

If you want a new Amiga-like OS, then OS4 is pretty much out of the question at this time unless you find a used AmigaOne. AROS is probably your best bet because it runs on a regular PC, thus you can circumvent all of the known hardware problems with the AmigaOne, plus it's free.

...except that AROS isn't done yet and AmigaOS 4 is on its final release version.

True AROS isn't yet finished but at least I can see tangible progress on it.  I've also got it Hard Drive loaded on a P4 1.7GHz machine and it's running good.  I haven't done as much with it yet as I want but from what I've seen and done it's very impressive.   :)

Don;t hold your breath on OS4. It appears to be DOA for a long, long, long time.

Has anyone even heard from the guys at hyperion as of lately? I have not seen any posts from them since OS4 went final.

Even more so for AROS, unfortunately.

Whats it gonna take to get a new Amiga on the market????

I think we all have to accept that the Amiga Platform Is all But Distroyed. Its Been Too Long However, A PC Baced System Appears To Be Quite Capable Of Emulating Vintage Amiga Kickstarts & Apps.

If any new Amiga ever appears on the market... I think it should be based on a PC using a different FDD Coltrol Chip.

Then The Amiga may stand a chance. There is no requirement for Kickstarts anymore because a new Amiga Should use generic components fromany computer shop thus keeping cost down and allowing for easy upgrade.

I aint no programmer (well apart from PHP & MySQL) but they should have gone down this road when planning AmigaOS4.0

The AmigaOne used PC-style graphics cards and sound cards and wireless network cards in PCI slots just like a PC.

The only reason they used PowerPC chips instead of Pentiums is that Pentiums natively use little-endian byte-ordering.  That means, in order to maintain backward compatibility they'd have to add a BSWAP opcode after every read to the bus and before every write to the bus.  That would have adversely affected performance.  AROS, doesn't do this and, therefore, requires EUAE for any sort of backward compatibility at all.

Why is everyone so concerned about backward compatability???

If Amiga is gonna survive, forget the past. What u gonna do with a backward compatable amiga? play old 16/32bit games in HAM mode.

So long as the disk system is compatable for the transfer of files thats all that is required. if you wanna play ur old amiga games... buy an old amiga off ebay.

If amiga is gonna move forward, forget the past, weve moved on from 4096 colours and AGA Graphics

The reason for concern about backward compatibility is that there is little software written for modern Amiga architechtures and we need our old stuff to keep running.

If you want to learn to write your own software and support yourself, get AROS, it's perfect for you.  You won't need the Amiga brand since you consider the classics to be dead anyway.
