Having trouble with Ultima VI and Space Quest III
« on: March 14, 2007, 08:50:35 PM »
I have some .ADF images of these which i transferred to my Amiga 1000 and I'm having some weird difficulties.

First the issue with Ultima VI. It has 3 disks and when you boot from the first one, it asks to create 4 disks and have you label them as Program, Populace, Portrait, and one other I can't remember.  Anyway, it starts asking to do a lot of disk swapping as it copies files from the main 3 disks and decompresses them to these 4 new disks.  However, I always get an error when it asks me to insert the portrait disk and tells me the disk is full.  But it hasn't even written anything to it yet.  If I give it a different disk at this point and hit retry, it will continue.  But then later it tells me that the volume "Data2" is full.  Which is actually one of the 3 original disks and it shouldn't be writing anything to it at all.

Anyway, needless to say, the game intro works but the game itself won't.  I've tried this 3 times with same results and even tried it using an emulator with lots of RAM available, etc.  same issue.

Space Quest III gives me similar type of problems.  It requires that I boot from a workbench disk as the space quest III disk isn't bootable.  I insert the space quest disk into DF1: and click the icon to start it.  It begins, and it plays the intro sequence.  Then it asks me to insert Disk 2.  So I remove disk 1 and insert disk 2.  At this point workbench throws up an error on the screen demanding that I re-insert disk 1.  So I do that, but then space quest is still wanting disk 2.   So i try removing the workbench disk from DF0: but then the same issue occurrs with workbench demanding I re-insert the workbench disk in DF0:

I only have two floppy drives.  how do I make this work?

Hi,

I have an original of Space Quest III and it comes on four disks, not three...

The manual states that Workbench should be booted prior to loading the game, but I found that the first disk automatically boots and loads the game anyway. I had no disk swapping hassles (tested on an Amiga 500, 1Mb RAM, KS1.2, single internal floppy drive).

Don't forget to look out for Monolith Burger!

I was talking about Ultima on the 3 disks.

My version won't boot from the first disk.  Of course, these did come off of a torrent I downloaded, so I guess I got what I paid for.

Yes!  I played this on an IBM 286 many, many years ago.  I was looking forward to reliving it, but on the Amiga platform this time around.
