Linux and my old laptop
« on: March 13, 2007, 04:42:15 AM »
I have an IBM I Series ThinkPad running at 300 Mhz with 128MB of RAM.  It is currently running Winhos 98.  I am thinking of making it my first experiemnt into the world of Linux.  Anyone have a suggestion on what version of Linux I can convince the beast to run?  Thank you in advance.

If you have a not too small hd, install Linux a copy of Amithlon.

If you have a copy, of course. :eureka:

Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

Alright cool.  That is something good to know as I was at a loss as to what to try.  Anyone else has suggestions that would be great.  For the fun of it, once I get down to it, I'll let you know if I nuke the thing or not.

You also might give Xubuntu a try. It will probably be slower than DSL, but maybe it's usable.

A debian based distro using a lightweight window manager like xfce4 or similar. KDE and GNOME will use too much ram in my opinion.
My favorite debian based distro is ubuntu.

I'd offer Puppy Linux as a great distro to try on the laptop.  Or as others have offered, Damn Small Linux, which would be my second choice.  Both are fantastic distros for older pc's.
