i need help w/ my a2000...
« on: June 10, 2003, 08:44:07 PM »
okay, about 8..no 10 years ago, my powersupply in my a2000 decided to die. will any powersupply work? i have a few pcs that are collecting dust and was wondering if their powersupply would work.
also, through undisclosed events my a2000 has become disassembled. as in, all cards and cords have been dislocated from  where they should be. if anyone has a diagram or would like ot take a stabat explaining jsut how to put it back together. that would be great.
and one last thing. those long 10 years ago, when the powersupply died, the moniter (which worked) got tossed. i have no actual moniter that fits the port. but the amiga does have the video/audio RCA outs. can i connect a tc to that and use it as a moniter, or do i have to do some configuring for that to work (configuring that requies a moniter which i dont have)?
i hope someone can help me, and thanks.
i have a ram stick and a hard drive.

Power supply, i dont know. Excuse my lack of knowledge on the a2000 but if it has a standard amiga video port, then you will be able to connect a modulator to it, then you have the ability to connect to either a TV via RF, or SCART or composite video.

hope this helps!

If you search on Aminet, I think that there are a few hardware hacks for getting AT, or even ATX supplies, working with Amigas.

As for the TV, you can connect that straight into the composite out on the A2000 (you may need a SCART-Phono lead).  If it has a built-in modulator you could use that, but quality wouldn't be as good.  Or you could get a converter and use the big video connector - a few modes for WB and applications should work with a normal monitor then, though you would need to buy a scandoubler to get games etc on a PC monitor.

The short and sweet answer is yes, a pc supply will run your 2000. With the right diagrams you can splice the amiga connector on to a pc supply. Some newer pc supplies do neat things, like not turning on unless they sence certain signals from the mother board. You will need a simpler or older pc supply that just comes on no matter what. Or one that only comes on when it senses a current of any kind. In the past I have used pc supplies to run an A500 and an A2000. Remember those "Big Foot" power supplies from long ago. Just PC supplies with greater wattage and an amiga connector strapped on. Seek out some diagrams on the connectors and pin outs of the amiga and your pc supply. If you can't find them, I know I still have info around here some where. As for monitor, almost any magnavox monitor with liner RGB/TTL RGB inputs in the back will work. You will have to find a cable that connects the monitor to the amiga. Some one should still have them for sale some where, SoftwareHut shut.com maybe. You can use the RCA but it will look bad. You could also spend a few $$$ and get a used flicker fixer and attach it to a vga monitor. This site had alot of old info that might be helpful... http://www.amigau.com/ and send questions if you like through the pmail button. I'll help if I can. I've built and repaired many commodores in my time.

Well, the composite out on the back will plug straight into any television, but oh my it'll be in black and white, and poor quality at best! Make sure to plug every thing where it needs to go, that's all I can say.

@nazo

I'm not an expert by any means, but I read and research a lot.  From what I've been able to gather, you "Can" make a PC power supply work for an Amiga, but you must know exatly what you are doing, because the PC and Amiga ae not very compatible beasts, so to speak.  Seems to me something about a "tic"signal needed by the power supply.  Maybe someone else could elaborate on this.  Believe me, I've done my share of finding  something  isn't compatible... and "PHSSSST" , smoke gets in yer eyes. :-P
