BeOS 5 Pro and Apple Question

Does anyone have any experience with intstalling BeOS 5.O Pro to an Apple machine?
I have an Apple Workgroup Server 9650.  I do not have an Apple OS to put on it.

Hi,

How much RAM does it have? If there's a reasonable amount installed, have you considered a PPC version of Linux?

You can also obtain Mac OS 7.5.3 and the 7.5.5 updates direct from Apple for no charge. See this site for more information.

Failing that, eBay should be a good source of very cheap used Mac OS 8.x CDs...

You must have MacOS installed to run the BeOS bootloader. Just a minimal install will do.

I installed the version on the BeOS pro disk on a Beige Power Mac 7100. If you have any specific questions about it please ask. The version I remember required the drive to be partitioned and a Mac OS 8 or 9 on the drive because you couldn't boot directly into BEOS or boot the machine. This had to do with lack of open firmware. Several things were missing when I got it installed, although it peformed better than MacOS on the machine and multi-tasked well some things were missing like the Real Player version that was included with the Intel version. My impressions was that I would probably go back to the last 4.x version if I had to run BeOS on the PowerPC. Version 5 Pro was never fully developed on PowerPC and the 5 distribution has a few problems. I would suggest that you'd find more applications and binaries for the PowerPC if you go with a 4.x version of BeOS..

That's my experience from a few years back. You might talk to the folks over on BeBits.com about their experiences and check out their binaries for it..

After looking for a while I found out that you needed Mac OS to run the thing.  Crap! I may run it on a Dell Power Edge machine that I have.  It has 2 x P3-500's.  

I did look at Debian PPC and will probably buy it from www.cheapbytes.com.  My modem.... well you get the idea.

My boss has a couple of 8500's that has been on the shelf for a long while.  He will let me pay it out.  I hope to find a Mac Quadra 800.  It has a 68040 and may make a decent Amiga clone.

I am hoping to get enough hardware and software to make my own hardware design studio.  I have found what I want to do for the rest of my life as a career.  I got to it late but it will have to do.
I bought the Mac Server from my boss who specialises in 8088 and other vintage hardware.  
I also need to find a Windows program to work with those Mac OS discs.
I like too many computers.  If I get an Xbox360 and a PS3, I may say good buy to MSoft for good.

Well, with an XBox, you're not really saying goodbye, so much as 'go and live on my tv, instead'.

p.s. I played with a 360 last week, and enjoyed it a lot.  Good graphics capabilities, looks nice on good hdtv.

I want to get a dual core cpu for linux.
Has anyone used it with these new chips?
I have a dual P3 500.  If I had more memory it would run alot better.

Well, only if you code your own clone Amiga OS (or port AROS to it), and don't mind it being unable to run any amiga software.

Does the Quadra's have the same firmware situation as the PPC Macs?  Beos and I believe Linux need Mac OS to be installed.
Maybe I should have included UAE in the discussion.  I have not heard anything about UAE for 68K mac in a while.

You are aware that BeOS won't run on a 68k CPU aren't you? :-?

I understand that beos wont run.  My heading and content is not in agreement.
I do not know if a quadra has the same firmware situation as the ppc macs (ppc 8500).  I have tried to run Beos on PPC mac and no luck.
OS3.9 on mac with some sort of chip set emulator, unknown answer here.
