A1200 on internet?

Hello fellows,

just wondering if I need a board mounting a PPC 603e processor to suft the web with my A1200 of it can be done using 020/030 processor of my little accelerator board I own since I bouth Easynet 1200 PCMCIA Wireless NetGear.

Please let me know!

In theory you could get it to work. In practice it would be awful, especially using AGA.

I used to do it with my 68040 A1200 using a mediator based voodoo3 graphics card. This in itself was deadly slow compared to PC browsing.

I now use a BPPC 603e+ 040 board. Even with the PPC image datatypes it remains a frustrating experience.... But still wholly satisfying to see the miggy being put to good use! Gonna upgrade to a 68060 soon... maybe better - any comments???

Hi Daniele,

I have an A1200 with an 8 Meg RAM Card installed and often Chat and Mail with a Dial-Up connection using Miami, WookieChat and YAM.

Web browsing was always an adventure for me hoping the page would display.  I did too use the internet on a 68030/50mhz accel. card on an A1200.

For me, the best thing to use the Amiga for was to download programs via AmiTradeCenter, use Jabberwocky to talk to friends/family, and use IRC to just hang out with other Amigans...  :-)

I still wonder why nobody puts Amicomsys to use though.... I think its a great program and its being wasted with nobody using it. Great way to talk to Amigans only.  :-)

Rockape isnt realy surfing, more Instant messaging.

There is no PPC browser for the classic Amigas. Therefore the 68k cpu does almost all of the work. The PPC is only a fast coprocessor for images and stuff. The OS needs to switch between the two CPUs -Context switching. This causes overhead and slows things down....

I use my A1200 on the internet.

My specs are modest '030 with FPU @ 40Mhz and 32MB RAM.
Using AGA only on a 1084S, running AmigaOS 3.9

I have a 10mb cable connection and I run Miami and AmiFTP and WookieChat with no problems, however browsing the web is painful!

I used an 030 when I was still on dialup.
That was very painfull.
Have since been using an 060 on broadband, no problem at all.

I browsed for quite a while using an A1200/060 AGA only.  I will say that it was much less painful with an 060 card with plenty of memory, however it was nowhere near as fast as my 2000/040 with CV64-3d card.  For many Web graphics it is still true that 256 colors gives a reasonable output, and you can use monitor modes to give 800x600 which is generally adequate.  A flicker fixing box is also helpful.  And the 060 helps with all other tasks as well.  
For graphics where viewing the quality is most important, you can download the graphic and view it in a separate window with Superview or other higher quality renderer, which can use higher color modes.

The major headache was that the browser was not up to modern Web pages; even eBay with its _huge_ javascript pages was painfully slow.  For that site I would disable javascript for most pages and only enable it when I needed to bid / pay for something.  IBrowse was my choice at the time, 2.3 version I think.

Shame that no browser used HAM8 modes, that would make the graphics much better. It's not up to today's standards but would actually make all those 1260's usable at least!

the ppc would NOT make the internet better, a graphics card will.  But to simply answer your question, yes you can surf with the machine you have... ifcourse you need an ethernet card for you pci slot.
the main problem is that there is lack of browers that are worth a damn on the amiga.  Not so good, but possible.
