CD ISO image,How?
« on: June 07, 2003, 09:02:42 PM »
Hi there peeps!,
Birmingham calling , again!
How do i burn an ISO image game from the `Back2roots` web site, that can be read by the amiga.
I have already downloaded an ISO(and unzipped it,before you ask!) image, but when I burn the F**ker on to an CDR using my pee cee and try and load it into the amiga nothing happens, just says can not recognise file?.
any help appreciated, hopefully in the form of a `Step by Step`procedure.
Cheers

I haven't tried burning an Amiga ISO, so if there is a specific trick to it, then you may want to disregard this message....  ;-)

I'm assuming when you say "pee cee" you are meaning you're trying to use a Windows box to burn from?

Well, I'm not sure what you tried so far, but if it consisted of burning the .iso file in data mode to a Windows CD...   The Amiga won't much like that.  ;-)

An ISO is actually an image of a CD, much like a .DMS is an image of a floppy disk.  (Writting the DMS to a floppy will be very unsuccessful, but undms-ing it to one will work.)  So, when burning a non-standard ISO image in Win, I use "Nero Burning" on it.  You want to do the following.
1) Open Nero App
2) Close the wizard -- it's useless
3) Choose from pull-down "FILE > Burn image to CD"
4) when browsing, set to show all files
5) choose your ISO image
6) a requester will come up and ask you to confirm the structure of the ISO image.  Usually they will be ISO Mode 1 (PC/Mac) but Amiga MAY use ISO Mode 2.  You'll probably want to look this up, otherwise you may well make another coaster.
7) Follow prompts to burn
8) when finished, remove and test.

Hi guys,
I forgot to mention, i am trying to use the disk on my CD32 .
Like you say llwrath, I burnt  the disk on windows using easy cd creator.
I select the iso data file drop down in the set up page, but it remains as an .iso file.
So how do I uncompress the directory and make it bootable on the CD32?.
I have even copied the zip file to the amiga and tried to use Makecd on it, but to no avail.
Any help would be appreciated.
Sorry about the late reply , But the SUN HAS GOT HIS HAT ON!.

Hmm... Well, scrounging around the web a bit, I found an explaination for EasyCD Creator and ISO images....  It's pretty similiar to the Nero one...

The trick is that you don't want to burn the file in the default data mode (drag and drop), but you want to open it as an ISO.  Once you open the ISO, it should drop you right into a settings menu with the burn option.  You won't be able to see what files are on the CD until it's made.  Even after it's made, it may appear to be a bad CD to Windows...  (Just like expanding a DMS can give you a disk that shows as DF0:BAD, but properly works when booted)  It's just the nature of that.

There are utilities for expanding ISO images, but you probably don't want to do that....  You'd most likely end up with a CD you could see the contents of on the PC, but still couldn't use on the Amiga.

Ok... Anyhow, onward.  I found these instructions for EasyCD on-line...

---------------------------
After opening the Easy CD Creator program, select ‘Record CD from CD Image’ from the file menu at the top left.

Browse to the folder that you saved the ISO image in.

Change the file type to .iso through utilizing the drop down arrow in the "Files of type:" command at the bottom of the screen.  The file type will switch from *.cif to *iso during this process.  Once you have done this, your ISO file will show up in the folder.  Highlight it and select the "‘Open" button.

The CD writing dialog box will automatically open.  Select the burning options that are best for your system.  Insert a blank CD-R into your burner, if you have not already done so.  Select the "Start Recording" button to continue.

The process may take several minutes, depending on the size of the ISO image as well as your CD burner’s ability.  Once the disc is finished burning, select the "OK" button to complete the process.
---------------------------

Personally, I've had much better luck with Nero than I have with Easy CD creator, though.  (In fact, I no longer have EasyCD installed on my Windows machine...)  If possible, you might want to pick yourself up a copy of the Nero.  I think 5.5 or so is the newer version, and I'm not sure about pricing out there, but I got mine brand-new for approx $5 at the local swap.  Well worth the reduction in headaches!

Or just open it using Nero and it will burn by itself!

Hah!  You should know that Windows apps only automatically do things you DON'T want them to do....  Everything else is a fight!  ;-)

Glad it worked for ya!
