A4000T & OS 3.1
« on: February 19, 2007, 12:01:54 AM »
I have a A4000T that is running but I don't have the OS 3.1 disk for the tower anymore. I have tried to contact both Amigakit and Vesalia regarding availability of OS 3.1 for the A4000T since they both sell the ROMS for the tower but neither one has responded to my email. I understand the lack of response as a no, however it would have been nice to get an email response. I have purchased a generic OS 3.1 set from Amigakit and would like to know what files I need to put on the floppy from my hard drive and where to put them so that I can make my own OS 3.1 disk set for the A4000T. As things are now I just made a physical backup of my hard drive on to another hard drive for emergency's but I would like to have a floppy disk set also.

About a month or so ago there was an auction that I had won on Ebay for the OS 3.1 for the A4000T but the something happened and the sellers account was closed. I was lucky and got my money back from PayPal after filing a dispute. That was a nice surprise. Anyway if someone could help me to make my own set or has a set to sell I'd be thankful.

It is my understanding that the standard Workbench 3.1 disk set will work fine as long as you have the workbench.library file to add to it for the A4000T. It is missing from the 3.1 ROMs in that machine to make room for the NCR scsi driver.

At least it worked for me, as I don't have the "T" specific disk set either.

Thanks, I've purchase a set of 3.1 disk from Amigkit several months back and will try to "build" my own A4000T disk set by including the missing workbench.library file in the rom. I have 3.9 also but it is my understanding that I need to jump through the 3.1 hoops to get 3.9 installed. The A4000T belonged to a graphic artist. I planned on putting in a fresh hard drive but haven't gotten around to it. The A4000T has just been sitting on my desk looking pretty :-)

No, you don't need 3.1. You only need access to the CD ROM drive. Then you can run the OS 3.9 installer and create an emergency floppy disk. With this emergency disk you can install 3.9 from scratch, no other OS is needed.

You need Kickstart 3.1, though. OS 3.9 will not run with Kickstart 3.0.

Bye,
Thomas

That's encouraging news about not needing a full 3.1 install to get 3.9 going on the A4000T. I had thought because the workbench.library file wasn't in ROM I'd need a full 3.1 install first or at least use the 3.1 boot disk to get going. That's why I've been trying to get a 3.1 set for the A4000T and why I was going to attempt to make a set before going to 3.9.

Thanks, Bill
