Windows-based "net nanny" software - anyone use it?

Greetings!

Does anyone here have children that access the Internet? And if so, what sort of software are you using (Windows-based) to prevent them accessing stuff they shouldn't see?

My girlfriend's niece is eight and her dad's about to hook up a PC at home for them both to use... She's already quite savvy with IE/Firefox, Google, and several popular kids' web sites, but I've told her dad that he really ought to install something to stop her wandering off into the dodgy areas of the web...

Any thoughts or suggestions? Freeware stuff would be great, but the few freebies I tried were useless at blocking even basic stuff, so I guess a commercial product would be the way to go...

Thanks in advance! Any ideas appreciated, especially if you're using one of the known commercial products...

I don´t let my boy on the internet unless i´m sat by him, i find it´s easier than messing about with ¨replacement parent¨ software. ;-)

I personally agree with you - there's no way I'd let a young child have free reign on the net without supervision. When my partner's niece is here with us, there's always someone else in the same room to keep an eye on what she's looking at (it's mostly harmless stuff with Flash-based games and annoying music!!!)

But her dad doesn't have the same view and is likely to leave her with the computer...
