Weird stuff...
« on: January 30, 2007, 08:52:16 AM »
Well, I have been in the process of going thru all my old amiga floppies to transfer them into more futuresafe medias. Unfortunally it is a bit late for some of them. Stored in my parents basements the last 10 years has done them no good, so 80% of the discs is corupted, but I was able to save most of the content.

Anyway, since I was extremly lazy with labeling the discs I have been testing everyone. Making adfs or lha depending on content. And played around with old utilities and stuff.
(Well I droped all the old pirated games, but keept my Stag collection, hey it's a part of history, hehe)

Well, one program (that I had noe clue what was) just crashed the machine, and afterwards I was unable to boot. Iprefs and Adddatatypes ended in "Suspend/reboot".

So my question is, was this some kind of fancy virus from the good old days, or just a crappy game/utility that somehow corrupted some systemfiles?

(I copied over the files from the os3.9 cd (after yet again strugeling with idefix, that ended up with recovery all the time.) and it seems like its working.)

Update:

Got my computer up and running (but seemed a bit more unstable than usual).

Got VirusZ from aminet... "Happy new year 96" :)

I feel so nostalgic, hehe.

If you've still got loads of disks with unreadable content, you might have better luck with a Catweasel (PCI disk controller board) as this with a new floppy drive will probably be far better at retrieving data from old disks than a 20-year old Amiga floppy drive!

Also try an old old C= IEC bus drive, I think one was the 1581?  Old old drives sometimes read better than the new ones.
