Long time ago I use to have an Amiga ..... May the glory return
« on: January 29, 2007, 05:09:07 PM »
Its been 20 years since my first Amiga 500 . On its anniversary I thought Id sign up to the forums and see whats happening . I still have an Amiga 500 buried in the closet and I really want to take it out and start playing around with it . What Id really love to know is can you buy a new Amiga still ? Im a bit of a knob when it comes to computers these days , Id love to return to the glory days of the late 80s early 90s where the computers really touched deep inside my imagination and gave me a different view of the world . IBM today just doesnt cut it for , or the X-Box .

Im located in Sydney Australia , any Amiga clubs in Sydney , any users ?????

Anyway I have heaps of questions and will be bombarding the forums with lots of who what where and why !!!!

A few years ago you would have been able to buy NOS (NewOldStock) A1200s at several dealer and even NOS A500s from    an a.org user (Redrumloa).

There also were some Amiga-clones made quite recently (all sold out), but these were just bog-standard PPC-board in standard PC-formfactor running semi-compatible (no HW-banging) reimplementations of the Amiga-OS. But better not go there.

Today you can only rely on eBay, UAE or AmigaForever (UAE with licenced AmigaOS).
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

Welcome back! And a wise decision it is :-)

Jumping right at your question wether new Amigas can still be bought. Well, not the way they have been available. If it's brand new hardware you're after you might have to assemble a machine by yourself using new spare parts that are still available (in tiny, tiny quantities). As I don't feel like advertising here on the forum, send me a personal message and I'll point you to a site of a thrustworthy dealer who seems to stock the parts for A1200s, he might even be willing to assemble it, he could even discuss the possibilities.

If it's not needed to get brand new, go for a standard version  from eBay. A clean, solid A1200 shouldn't break the bank.

That's for the serious 'getting back' situation. There's also an admirable project going on by a member of this very forum. His name: Dennis van Weeren. His project: Minimig. There's a good 52 page long thread about it on the forum. On Wikipedia there's a good article about the Minimig as well.

Personally I never took much fun out of emulation using UAE. Always something seems to be out of tune runing the experience.
Get a SAM, while you can! The new AMIGA is here!

@Bug_racer: welcome to A.Org!

There are several frequent posters based in Australia and across the ditch in NZ, but not sure if there are any active user groups left in either country...

Have fun anyway, and dig that old Amiga out of the closet and see if it still works!!!

www.amigashop.com claims to have a NOS A1200 with UK keyboard for a little less than 200 euros.
The shop is just a couple of minutes from where I work, so I'll ask them if anyone's interested.
