why choose PPC for OS5? we need x86
« on: January 28, 2007, 08:58:45 AM »
amiga have made a very very poor decision going with PPC instead of x86 for OS5.
market forces dictated that we need a standard so things are compatible. if Amiga had gone with x86, EVERYBODY would be able to run it. not just people who manage to find the hardware to run it.
THAT DESICION IS A SAD DAY FOR AMIGA. THERE IS A FOLLOWING BUT EVENTUALLY THEY WILL DISAPEER.

I CALL ON ALL AMIGA USERS TO FLOOD AMIGA WITH EMAILS ASKING FOR THEM TO SWITCH TO X86. IT IS THE ONLY WAY TO SURVIVE.
PLEASE GIVE US AN ALTERNATIVE TO WINDOWS.
who the hell is going to buy a ppc computer?

now a thread I can bite into; I completely agree with this.  Modern x86 chips are (as we know better than any other platform user base), very capable of emulating the older stuff.  Mac went that was, (I know), so should we.

It would give the development community reason to accept Amiga once again.  -there is still room for custom chips if the OS can handle it at that level.  porting would be easier and we'd see the dream kept alive.

I think that OS4 is the vital chain in this; what I mean is people need to see OS4 and regard it as a serious contender (albeit on a small user base), and that may spur interest in developing apps for an OS5.

I'd be a supporter of this (mm how many times did I say that in the CBM years)....

When was it decided that OS5 would be PPC only?

Unless I missed something vital, the last info regarding OS5 was in Bill's 20Q where he said that OS5 would be a multi-platform OS.

If I am wrong, please correct me!

The problem is that we, Amigans, have already lost the power to bring HW innovations. The times of revolutionary custom chips are over and forgotten. So we had to rely on innovations of others... like we relied on PPC. However we lag so much that meanwhile we adjust to new HW platform, the platform itself is no more new, innovative nor generally supported.

Either we stick to mainstream HW with the hope it remains mainstream in the future so we have enough time to adjust or we bet on some innovation with the risky hope it will become more popular in the future.

What a pity that one of the possible mainstream solution (Amithlon) was killed.

Yup, as I see it, we need to use the best hardware available. No one is going to produce multi Ghz boards for us in the hope that OS5 sells millions of copies. The best we can hope for is cheap and readily available hardware for the OS we want to use.

I would, I love PPC.  I bought two other PPC-based boards just this week.

You're right, it never has been mentioned that OS5 would be PPC-only.
So this thread is completely bogus. (Apart from the fact that OS5 is only a pipe-dream of McEwen).

Erm, we all know that OS5 is pure vapour, right ? So what does it matter on what hardware it will run if it were real ?
Not really interesting, but it`s there.

I thought that AmigaOS 5 would be platform independant, so that the 'Amiga Anywhere' idea could take off and not like AOS4 and stuck to one restricted platform. Then we can run AmigaOS 5 on any machine whether its an AmigaOne, a PC, a Mac, a PDA, a console, a STB or a smartphone. Wouldn't that be a better goal to aim for than just x86?

Appropriate too considering how long this x86 vs. PPC argument has been going on for! :-D
