Help: CrossDos Problem?
« on: June 02, 2003, 09:54:48 AM »
Help.  I'm fiddling with a new install of Workbench 3, and I am having problems accessing 720k PC floppies. I was under the impression that CrossDos just worked magically in the background, but all that happens when I insert a PC disk (DD, 720k, readable on PC) is that a 'DF0:?????' icon appears and thats it.

What am doing wrong ? I wondered if it was down to something in the Mountlist but apparantly on a fresh WB3.0 install, there ISN'T a devs:mountlist ?

Have a look in SYS:Storage/DOSDrivers and you should find a PC0 icon. Drag it into SYS:Devs/DOSDrivers and all should be well.

When you've had enough of CrossDOS and it's 8.3 filenames grab FAT95 from Aminet and install that instead to get long filename support.

Aha, ta for that! I'll give that a go tonight.

I only need it temporarily to install IDEFix (the software is stuck in a LHA file on a PC floppy) so that I can test the CDROM on my custom A1200 rebuild.  Of course once I've put the soldering iron down on this project, I'll be AmiTCPing everything up :-)

Cheers,

Did you actually make it work?

Double-click on the icon after moving it, or reboot your computer.  Doing either one of those is needed in order to activate the driver.

If you won't need PC0 all the time leave it in the Storage drawer.  From there drag it onto workbench, highlight it and in the Icon menu select "leave out".

That'll leave it on the wb for whenever you need to use it, just double click it.  If you're not going to use it again, highlight it and in the Icon menu again, click "Put Away" and it'll magically disappear into the Storage drawer again :-D

Yeah, worked a treat. I'm begining to think I've forgotten more things about Amiga than I ever knew!

Still battling with IDEFix97, (see this thread ) though :-(

Once I've put an OS on it properly and I'm happy with the config, there will be lots of new pics on my amiga page detailing the conversion of a vanilla A1200 into an A1200D (Sparc) !  :-P

Hi

My two words. Two steps I actually did:
go to aminet and fetch two things:
1. fat95.lha - supports long filenames extension in Win. No more tildas and wondering about the real file name.
2. mfs21.lha - that will allow you to install several filesystems on the same logical drive - no more PC0! only DF0 that can read all. I use it actually with fat95 rather than CrossDOS.

Good luck
PiR
